How long is the flu contagious?

So, I might have the flu. I had a really bad stuffy nose starting Friday night (a stuffy nose is totally normal for me this time of year, but it was worse than usual) but otherwise I felt fine. I got a horrible night's sleep on Friday and when I woke up Saturday, I felt like death. Nose was worse, throat was gunky, allover body aches, and a general feeling that I'd been hit by a truck. I spent most of the day curled up on the couch under a blanket, and when I finally took my temperature in the evening, it was 101.7. So I called my midwife and she sent over a prescription for Tamiflu. She said it wasn't worth it to go to Urgent Care because they'd just do the same thing. Normally I would have waited it out a little longer, but since I'm pregnant I didn't want to take any risks. Anyway, I slept better (not great) last night and today do feel much better. Still not good, but more like I have a bad cold than the way I felt yesterday. I do not feel like I've been hit by a truck.

Anyway, I tried looking it up on the CDC website, but can't find any information. I'm wondering how long I'm contagious and should avoid going out? Especially since most of my activities during the week are with lots of little kids, like My Gym and Story Hour at the library. I certainly wouldn't go if I wasn't feeling good, but if I might still be contagious I don't want to risk infecting anyone, regardless of how I'm feeling. I got in one dose of Tamiflu yesterday and will do 2 a day as instructed for the rest of the 5 days (with one dose on day 6).

Thanks in advance for any replies.

You can be contagious for up to 5 days after contracting symptoms, but you can be contagious for a day or more before you have any symptoms.

I think I've heard until 24 hours past when the fever is gone.

ETA: I just googled it and read that it's for 5-7 days after the symptoms start.

If it's 5-7 days after symptoms started, we should probably stay home pretty much all week then, for sure at least from the activities that are around kids. We should probably skip the birthday party we were supposed to next Saturday too.

We have the week after starting to feel better rule here..that is helpful also just incase other family members get sick.
Oops. I didn't notice the tamiflu part. If you take tamiflu you are less contagious. And the 24 hrs after the fever seems to be the general rule. My Aunt Gina always says 24 hrs after the fever breaks--she's a Nurse Practitioner so we generally ask her minor medical questions.

Thanks medussa

I called my doctor's office and they told me 24 hours without fever. I'm still going to wait a day or so until I'm feeling good and mostly symptom-free, but it's good to know we don't have to be housebound all week.

Pixie, I hope you're feeling better. My sister is 36 weeks pregnant and had H1N1 a few weeks ago, as did her 3-year-old and husband. She said it was miserable like the flu always is, but they all recovered well and are feeling fine now.

I'd definitely be on the lookout for Sol developing symptoms, too. Since you can be contagious before you show symptoms, maybe waiting a few more days to make sure he doesn't have it (and unknowingly spread it to another child) would be good before going out.
I'd probably stay home until symptoms are going away, even if you're not technically contagious. You'd probably make some moms mad if you appear sick (sniffling or coughing) even if their kids can't catch anything.

P.S. I hope you feel better soon. I know it's gotta suck being pregnant and sick because your medications are limited and you probably feel worse than the rest of us would.
Thanks M, it is the suck. Luckily my husband's been picking up a lot of slack around the house and with Solomon so I can rest and recuperate.
