Life Coach, Jack Canfield Coaching?

Hi there,

Just curious if anyone here has worked with any kind of life coach and what their experience was? I have signed up for Jack Canfield's coaching after reading "The Success Principles: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want To Be" .... I really want to make a great living and love what I do and just generally be a happier person, parent, and wife... I do not think counseling or therapy is riight fit for that. Coaching sounds good! Just curious if others have tried and what the process was like, and what the results were? Would you recommend for others? Best to everyone here at NaturallyCurly...

So to share more about the coaching experience so far, I am becoming more aware of my perfectionism and my lack of self-confidence. I thought I was pretty confident and I like that I strive to be the best I can be, but I see now that I do not always see myself as great just as I am right now, and that is the best starting point, the starting point that isn't about beating oneself up for not being better...
Anyone struggle with similar issues? I think being a curly girl has ties to this kind of struggle... Always wanting better... And on the journey to being confident with our natural curls.... Does anyone have tips that help them with perfectionism? Tips on how they increase their self confidence? I appreciate any and all comments. Best to all you curlies!

belicious, I don't know if this is what you are asking for, but I am highly suspicious of any of the personal awareness training programs, due to my own experience with an individual who got involved with one. I came across this:

There may be more on that website, or if you google Jack Canfield.

I have the book of the same name, DH was reading it, I may get around to it eventually.
Don't let your heart be broken. Let it love.
I know of a couple people who dropped some big bucks for life coaching sessions. It seemed to me to be a lot of common sense, based on what they told me about their coaching sessions.

KurlyKae, Can you tell me more about the experience of the person you know? I really appreciate the link. I think I will share my concerns with one of the coaches I trust and see what the response is. There is a sort of satisfaction guarantee. I will make sure I am satisfied. I have expressed my skepticism all along, and that has been received well, even encouraged. I think the basic message is to get what you want out of the experience, get what you signed up for... If this means my money back, I will ask for that. Thanks for all the comments. Right now, I am still keeping an open mind but a skeptical one.

"Mary" was my boss. She attended a weekend long seminar, came home from that, and quickly began the recruiting process. Initially, with email invites, later using time at staff meetings to talk up the program and invite staff to an introductory meeting. Lucky for me, my assistant knew some people who had been involved with that program before, and recognized the recruitment pattern. That's when I decided to google it, and found the website I linked, and a lot of negative information related to it.

If we fastforward, the recruitment continued, as a group, as well as one on one. As "Mary" discovered that an individual was absolutely not interested, she basically wrote them off. She had been the best supervisor I'd ever had, and became the worst. There was no support, no assistance. She only spoke to me, and the others if necessary. Buzz words from the program made their way into her vocabulary, verbally, and in emails. She was trying to use the program on us, while trying to get us to the intro night.

I never went to the intro, but others did. It was a high pressure sales pitch, ending with their rushing you to register for the weekend seminar at about a $450 fee.

Only one that I know of signed up, only to go home and realize she had a major family event that weekend. When she went to the boss about that, she got a vague response about making a "committment" to herself and the program. Meanwhile, the program was refusing to refund her money. I think the woman eventually had to go to her credit card company to remove the charges. The program kept calling, until she threatened to call a lawyer for harrassment.

After I and others left the job, "Mary" did something I never would have predicted, and quit without notice, over a holiday weekend, leaving everyone else to pick up the pieces. From what I understand, ALL her relationships suffered from the changes that occured in her: family, colleagues, friends. (the personal is what I've heard, I don't speak with her at all now) The only ones she was okay with, last I heard, are the daughter that got her involved and friends in the program.

Well, that is more than I intended to write. It still makes me sad to know this happened, and annoyed that she tried to draw so many of us into it. Any time I hear of some one considering a "large group awareness seminar" I try to speak up, and ask them to do their research. It saved me my sanity and $$, I believe.

Can you just read some self help books? Do you have any very positive, successful friends who can motivate you?

KurlyKae, "Mary's" story makes me think of Landmark. It is big in the SF Bay Area, and I know people who have attended and have behaved similarly to Mary in the beginning. I also know people who have attended and really benefitted and are private about their experience and share their experience to those who are interested and do not seek to recruit. I think it's important to see the different ways people respond to things and to be aware of how I am responding. I will make the most of any experience I sign up for. I do believe many, if not, all of the benefits from these programs can be gained through time reading quality books that speak to you, successful friends and colleagues who care enough to spend the time to listen and support and encourage, even therapy, great spouse, great friends, school, great work, etc. I just think these programs can be a more intensive way to get benefits in a more condensed timely way, but some people can go overboard...

Spiderlashes, I appreciate your questions. Motivation is not an issue for me. I am incredibly motivated. I am someone who people trust will achieve my goals I set for myself. I want to sort of map out my life so that I am getting the most fulfillment and joy from it... Does that make sense? That is what I am wanting a coach for... I have my MBA now, and if I were to start a business, the first thing I would want to carve out is basically a quality mission statement. What is the business' purpose? What do I want all of the employees to understand and want to put their time and energy into? What is the greater good of the business? I see how these questions are just as relevant in creating a great life. Make sense?

belicious, would you consider a non-affiliated life coach? There are some independent life coaches around here. I think that would get you away from the whole pyramid scheme setup or whatever it is.

Of course you'd have to get feedback from somewhere on the independents - the BBB? They can't all be evil.

I spoke to the customer service people about my concerns about Jack Canfield and about his son's book at Jack Canfield coaching and they encouraged me to do all I could to get peace on the matter. I spoke with one of the coaches I trust and feel better about this purchase/experience. The coach said that Jack spoke to the coaches before the book came out and was contrite about the ugly things his son experienced, fully supported his son's desire to tell his story, understands the damage that he responsible for and strives to make right. The coach encouraged me to seek more answers on this if I need them. I respect the coach so far. Not sure how I feel about Jack Canfield yet?

Why not just go to a therapist instead of something that may well be a cult or scam?
belicious, you hit the nail right on the head with Landmark. That's the one. The fact that you did is another confirmation to me that Landmark, can indeed be detrimental. Sad.

I am glad to hear that you are being careful about the program or coaching you are considering. If it's about you, and what you want to achieve, not about bringing everyone you know into the program, then I see a difference right there. It also sounds like you are doing your homework, so to speak, on researching the program and how you wish to go about using it. That sounds very smart to me.

I wish you all the best, in all that you do!

So here is the scoop on the coaching. I asked for a refund based on the fact that I attended all sessions and my coach was terrible. I could not get anywhere with this program.

They never sent a refund and I reported them to the better business borough. check out the complaints.

The coaches actually come from Utah. They are not known coaches by any means. When I googled my coach, there was nothing about her professionally.

These coaches are also the one who coach for robert kyosaki the millionaire next door guy.

buyer beware.

I did coaching with Mastin Kipp, the founder of Daily Love. He follows the principles of Tony Robbins. I can't say enough wonderful things about the experience. It helped me break destructive patterns and make peace with things that happened in the past.

BB, just curious -- did you do this coaching in person, by phone, or internet?

That may sound like a goofy question, but I've been tempted to try to work with someone outside of normal daytime hours, and I don't want to go there in person because I am so tired at the end of my stressful work day.

Hi Spiralli, I'm on the East Coast and he is on the West Coast so we did all our sessions by phone - you can also do them by Skype. But I think he does all his sessions that way.
Before I signed on with him, we had an introductory phone call and I filled out a questionnaire. This is key when selecting a coach to make sure you mesh. My friend has a coach and when we talk about the different coaching styles, I know her coach would not work for me.
If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me! It was seriously the greatest thing I did for myself.
