Does your DVD player play music cds?
I have a friend who doesn't seem to believe his DVD player will play music cd's. Does yours?

You need an "I don't know, I've never tried it" option.

My old dvd player, a 2000 Toshiba, does not. But every dvd player I've seen in the stores lately, does. They play CD, MP3s, and dvds. I can even view pictures on it.

Some DVD players won't play home-burned CDs, but most play anything.

We have this region free one that is a bit "special" (aka weird). It doesn't play music I believe.

Yep, mine does. It's pretty old so sometimes it's a bit fussy (or maybe it just doesn't like my music).

Chill dude. You outed yourself on this one. The sound comes out of the same place where the sound comes out when you watch tv. Yes, it needs to be on, and tuned to whatever channel you need it tuned to if you watch a dvd. And I KNOW you have at least one cd ... unless you used it for a coaster for your beer or something...but no, you don't seem much like a coaster kinda guy.

If you just have your DVD player hooked up to the TV, no sound will come out of the TV when you play a CD. If you have the whole thing hooked up through a receiver, the CD sound will come out of your speakers just as the sound would for a DVD. You can use a DVD player instead of a CD player in a stereo system.
I learn this stuff from my BF, who used to install high-end audio and home theater systems for a living. It can get MUCH more complicated!
