Need clever Halloween costume ideas (for a 10 year old boy)

My son is going to a Boy Scouts costume party later this month. We're trying to think of clever costume ideas. Last years winners were a Laundry Basket (with dirty clothes) and Smartie Pants (Smarties candies glued to the kid's pants). I like the idea of puns, but I have NO creativity of my own.

I've been researching ideas on the web and so far have come up with:

Cereal Killer: Glue cereal boxes all over your clothes and stick plastic knives out of them, with fake blood

Spongebob: Wear a black sweat suit and hot glue pieces of sponge to your pants. Also, wear a nametag sticker that says "My Name Is: BOB."

a Giant - carry miniature people and doll house furniture

but my boy's not crazy about any of those ideas. Of course, he's not volunteering any ideas of his own, either.

Anyone have any clever - and age appropriate - costume ideas?

Thanks
Those are really great ideas. I like the cereal killer one. If my son were into homemade costumes, I'd makes the knives out of paper and paste them on.

Maybe you could try googling ideas for costumes. Good luck!
I was a bubblebath one time. I got a big round plastic tub, cut the bottom out of it, drilled holes and attached a ribbon to each side for shoudler straps to hold it up. Then I drilled small holes all over the tub. I blew up ballons (pink or blue) and pulled the knot through thte hole and they will hold themselves up on the outside of the tub and look liek bubbles. then I wore a shower cap (witha few bubbles attached to it), hot glued a washclotha dn a rubber ducky to the front edge of the tub. I just wore white capris and a blue tank top underneath. It was really cute.

My friend was spaghetti & meatballs. She wore a colender on her head, a red sweatsuit with cream yard bunched together and sewn/hotglued on all over the suit and for meatballs, she used those brown craft balls (they look like cotton balls but are colored) and glued those all over too.
A closed mind is a wonderful thing to lose.

There was this girl that I worked with who went as a table she cut a big circle out of heavy cardboard or some kind of light wood and then cut a hole in the middle for her head then she glued a cheap table cloth to the circle and glued plates and silverware to the table and then put like a flower hat on so she was the center piece it was pretty cute.
I did the laundry basket thing one year, and I would recommend you pick a costume that he's going to be able to move in, sit in, and get through doorways in. I was limited in my mobility, because the laundry basket was so big and bulky around my waist.

My kids still talk about the fact that I wore a pair of my son's underwear on my head, though!

My son is 8, and in the past he has always done trademark things, like a Bionicle or Harry Potter or Arthur. This year he wants to be a monster, but a non-specific one. I think it's because he wants to go to the costume store and pick out random cool accessories. He knows, however, that he's not allowed to be so scary that it worries his younger brother and sister.
The above ideas are really good!

The costume I always wanted to try was to be a bunch of grapes. Simply wear a green or purple sweatsuit to which the same color of small blown up balloons are attached. I'm not sure what would be the best way to attach the balloons.

As for the OP, I like the above ideas. I've always thought pun costumes were funny.

I found this site with some suggestions:

Good luck!

The took those pumpkin leaf bags and cut hole out of the bottom for their legs the wore green stockings and then when the put the bag on we stuffed paper in them and then tied the top around their necks (oh yeah we cut holes for arms to) and I think they wore a green long sleaved shirt and then we put their hair in buns on the top of their hair and put a green sock on thier buns for the stem it was really cute.
I did something similar to the grape idea one year - a bag of jelly beans. I took a clear plastic trash bag and cut holes for legs and arms, then made a "Jelly Belly" label on it out of construction paper. Then I stepped into the bag, filled it with different colored balloons, and tied it off (loosely) around my neck with a colorful ribbon.

My 10 year old son is going to be an 'old man superman' this year. He's getting a cane and a grey wig, we're going to stuff his belly to stick way far out too
I knew someone who went as "Count Spatula" and glued spatulas all over a dracula cape.
