Medium texture, normal porosity and elasticity...let's share!
I would love to see what products others with these properties are using along with favorite combos, techniques, etc.! I realize it also depends on where you live, weather, etc. I've tried reading other curlies/waives signatures to see who has similar properties but it can get overwhelming!!! I though it might be nice to have a thread where we could share this information. :) thank you in advance!!!
I will start first. I live in a dry climate where the average dew point is in the 30's year round, so I've recently tried using products without glycerin or where the glycerin is not high in the ingredients list and liking the results. Cleansing: shampoo bars Co-wash with suave or other conditioners CJ daily fix Shampoo+coconut or babssu oil (jessicurl, KC come clean shampoo) Mastey Traite cream shampoo DevaCurl NoPoo DevaCurl LowPoo Darcy's botanicals cleansing conditioner Conditioners: (use as rinse outs, DT and/or leave in) GVP conditioning balm (LOVE) Suave (variety) Darcy's botanicals pumpkin seed conditioner (LOVE) Tresseme naturals (moisture) Cure care Regis design olive oil conditioner *plan on repurchasing* Kenra Moisturizing Mop Top daily Co Leave-in's Eluecence moisture balance Md red clover leave in Curly kinks satin roots leave in SM curly hair milk Oyin honey hemp Oyin honey dew Giovanni direct leave in <3 JC deep treatment CJ rehab SS deep treatment Stylers: AOMM FSG (Love) KCCC <3 SS CEJ Marie dean curl style cream BRHG Curls gel-les'C <3 Curly kinks coil jam HESMU Aussie instant freeze BB's Mudd and fsg UFDCM <3 CJ Curl Queen MopTop Anti frizz gel (med hold) and Fuzzy Duck CHS Curlkeeper <3 Shea moisture smoothie Mop C curl defining cream oils: Coconut oil Camellia oil Evoo EO's serum Babssu oil (currently experimenting with..so far, so good) Mineral oil (plain J&J baby oil) Argan oil (100%) Sweet almond These are products that I currently use or have used successfully in the past. I love to experiment! I don't have any problems or issues with build up or proteins, etc. I really need to and would like to narrow down my favorites to a few in each category :D....maybe soon.:help: ***currently testing out Mop C curl defining cream, LALSG and LALPSG.*** |
Great topic! I'm new to CG, just got my hair properties and am still trying to sort out which products my hair loves, which it hates, and in what combinations. Here's what I've got in my stash so far:
Low Poo: Jessicurl Gentle Cleanser, Burt's Bees More Moisture with Jojoba RO: Jessicurl Aloeba, Burt's Bees More Moisture with Jojoba LI: JC Aloeoba, JC TooShea!, CJ Beauticurls Leave In Stylers: JC Gelebration Spray, Confident Coils, CJ Pattern Pusha, Zotos Pure Elements Alcohol Free Medium Hold Gel Testing: JC Rockin Ringlets Trying to decide if CO-washing will work for me, and have used the BBMM for that a couple of times. Still looking for a frizz killer...I live in hot, humid Houston, Texas and don't know what will work here. Tried a couple of curl refreshers (JC Awe Inspiraling, Deva Mist-er Right) and hated the waxy sticky feeling I got from them. |
My hair type and hair products are all listed in my sig.
I live where it's humid half the year and dry half the year. I really don't change my routine much from season to season, tho I tend to use more Ojon in the winter when my hair loses definition. |
Curlsnswirls, we're not completely hair twins, but based on your product list, it looks like our hair likes the same things. My hair is fine, normal porosity, and normal elasticity. Although it's fine, it's pretty dense, so I can handle some heavier products. I also live in a dry climate (Colorado) so the dews are in the 20-30 range most of the year (with the exception of a few months in late spring/early summer when dews are above 40). So, most of the time I try to avoid glycerin/humectants too high up the list, and my hair craves moisture big time. Here are some of my fave products so far:
Wash: CJDF L'Oreal Evercreme Conditioner (RO): Tresemme Naturals (moisture) Suave Naturals (everlasting sunshine) GVP conditioning balm DB pumpkin seed LI: Giovanni direct LI SM curl & style milk As I Am LI CK satin roots Cure care Stylers: DB curl styling cream DB cream gel SS CEJ BS curls stretch gelee JC RR FSG Oils: EO serum Grapeseed oil Apricot oil Sweet almond oil I have become a hopeless PJ, and I too love to experiment. So far, I am LOVING anything from DB. I haven't tried much of the CK line, but love the LI and would like to try some of the other products. Same with BS- the gelee is awesome, and I would like to try more of that line. I guess my hair prefers the more natural, boutique type products. I ordered a slew of samples of LI and gelee type products from kathymack (including CRN, Marie Dean, UFD, Shescentit, BS, etc.) and have been having tons of fun. I don't really like traditional gels, and have found that I prefer curl creams, cream gels and gelees. I prefer to have soft, touchable hair and will sacrifice some hold/definition for that. I used to think I had a protein sensitivity, but I think I just needed to get the protein/moisture balance correct, and cut down on humectants. I've never tried straight coconut oil, but my hair seems to like it in products so that's on my list. Sent from my iPhone using CurlTalk |
Jsuzkelley, we do like/use a lot of the same products! There are a couple I haven't tried though, the L'oreal Evercreme and the As I Am leave in. I've been wanting to try them both out because I've been hearing good things about them. I have more products than what are listed in my siggy :tongue1:....those are just the ones I use more consistently. I want to start experimenting by using the same product combos for one week at a time and see which ones work consistently. This may help narrow down my faves. There are few more products that I'd like to try though, CJ pattern pusha, the two I mentioned already, BB's FSG, As I Am jelly, and can't remember which others right now. I do like to experiment:cheese:. I was really liking cur keeper but I seemed to get a little dry after a while. I was amazed at being able to use just one styler and nothing else...I may bring it back out and alternate with other products to keep my hair balanced.
My hair hasn't met an oil it didn't like so far, which I'm glad about. Off to experiment some more.......:thumbright: |

Jsuzkelley, how are you liking the Oyin hair dew? I've been eyeing that and a few other items. I'm thinking of ordering the snack pack but curlmart is out of them.

Thank you! Just wanted to update...I've been auditioning a few mousses (?). I've been pleasantly surprised at the results so far. First of all I never would have thought that I could get away with just some leave in and one styler!!! I have been having awesome results with either just a LI and curl keeper and now a LI and just mousse!!! So far I've tried the 3-in-1 mousse (purple can), GVP PM sculpting foam and joiwhip. I like them all..now to see which one holds up the best. There is one more I want to try, beyond the zone from Sally's. I'm loving the simplicity of just one styling product. I may not get away with it during the winter, but for now it's working!! I definitely need to go through my product stash and clear out the cupboards!! I'm narrowing down my search for staple products! Although there are a few conditioners I'd like to try out from Oyin and one from ingredients to die for :D.

I just got my properties from Live Curly Live Free, and they said I am medium, normal, normal! I had thought my hair was fine with low porosity, so I think it leans slightly that way, but I guess I'm close to the middle.
I live in Northern Virginia, which has crazy high dew points right about now. I can't really use a leave-in conditioner in this weather. I've tried out a bunch of products since I went CG, including: Deva Low-Poo (a-ok) Deva OneCondition (too moisturizing, had to switch to something else for the summer, also has hops which causes me to break out) Deva Mister Right (not feeling it, doesn't really do much except cause frizz and it stinks) Deva Angel (eh, kinda sticky, could have more hold) Kinky Curly Curling Custard (love it, works great) Kinky Curly Knot Today (eh) Loreal EverSleek Serum and Cream (smooths frizz pretty well, smells great) Yes to Carrots conditioner (good) CJCCCCL and AG:recoil (too heavy and sticky for summer) Aloe Vera Gel (not enough hold) Curl Keeper (like it, have to use a lot) AIF (super strong hold, kinda drying) So as you can see, my routine is still a work in progress. If anyone else with similar properties wants to chime in that would be great! |
Hi all!
First post, but been lurking for a while. I also just got my live curly live free analysis and I'm normal porosity, medium density, normal elasticity too! I think I lean coarse and low po, but not a huge difference in dos and dont's. I'm glad you started this thread for us! So I normally live in Seattle which has nice to just under not so nice dew points all year. But I've spent this summer in south Florida with crazy humidity and high dew points in the 70s. I finally figured out that less is so much more in this summer tropical weather. Here's my easy regime: Alaffia Shea and Virgin Coconut Enriching shampoo. KCKT as RO. Kiss my face upper management gel scrunched in wet hair. Scrunched wet hair to damp with Tshirt. Gel scrunch again. I don't plop! (blasphemy, i know, but it just doesn't work for me). Then let gel set then SOTC with another tshirt and I've got big soft bouncy waves and little to no frizz. Happy waves abound! With only three products! I'll be experimenting more when I get back to Seattle. But I think I'm going to keep on keeping on with the Less is More for this kind of hair texture. What do you think? I'm also thinking that the Alaffia has too many emollients and it can make my hair stringy not clumpy. I really love the smell so Hm. Anyone have any suggestions there? Thanks! |
I have been having consistent awesome results for a while now with a few products and I'm in love!! These are now my staples!!
I either cowash (conditioner or cleansing conditioner), use a shampoo/soap bar or an occasional low poo. Use a variety of conditioners for rinse out and leave in. Seal with a little oil. Use either curl keeper, BB's or Truepolaris (etsy) FSG or BB's Mudd. That's it!! My routine is now simplified and I'm having fantastic results. I love not having to layer a bunch of products. I just hope these work in the winter. If they do, then I'm set!! |
Just got my analysis back....
3B....Live Curly Live Free Analysis: Texture = Medium Porosity = Normal/Elasticity = Normal Wash: Desert Essence coconut shampoo/Loreal evercreme conditioning cleanser Condition: AO_Honeysuckle, Desert Essence Coconut, AO white Camillia, AO island naturals STYLE: CJCIAB/AOMM Jelly Staple: Jojoba Oil Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2 |
Hi all! I just got my hair analysis back too! I was surprised to find that I have medium texture (not coarse), medium porosity (really?) and elasticity. I was kinda hoping one would come back as really extreme so I might have an explanation as to why my hair is always soooo frizzy. But alas no. My stylers are in my siggy.
Curlsnswirls - I also live in a very dry climate (CO). I have been scared to try SSCEJ and CKCJ because of the salts (I think my hair hates these but it could just be the dry climate). Any thoughts on these products? I am loving the combo of KCCC and AIF with KCKT as a leave-in, though I might be overdoing the KCKT because my hair kinda gets limp as the day goes on. Glad you are having good results with FSG and CK! I need to try both again. |

I tried the KCCC/AIF combo tonight over Oyin hair dew. So far my hair looks great. I will see how it fairs tomorrow. I was really hoping to get KCCC to work for me again since I have a jar and a half. I remember when it did work, it gave me really great 2nd day hair. I'll report back.

Hi everyone! I got my hair analysis results back a bit ago and I've joined your medium-normal/normal ranks :) We have such a small corner of the forum!
I'm still very new to this whole thing, so I haven't done a ton of experimenting, but here are some of the things I've tried: Cleansing:
PT:
I'm still trying to find a good moisture/protein balance; my next plan for experimentation is to try a RO conditioner with keratin. |

I've been using them sort of sporadically...I'm still trying to figure out how much I can handle. I dye my hair and was in a straightening frenzy right before I started CG/found this site, so I have/had some damage ;)
I tried the Aubrey Organics GPB (yet another protein experiment) but didn't like it (found it too oily)...that was during my SheaMoisture adventure, though, so maybe I didn't give it a fair shot. I've seen good things about the Honeysuckle one? You have a bunch in your siggie! Do you have a favorite? |
