gel only styling works better? What is my porosity?

Hi curlies!

when I first started CG, my hair was in really bad shape. It was severely bleached damaged. It was very dry and frizzy and I used a lot of leave-in conditioner after my RO, what really helped. I had the feeling my hair needed a lot of moisture.

But recently I started to notice, my hair looks acutally better when I only put gel in it. The leave/in and oil weights my hair down. I can also use a lot more prote´n lately whitout dryness. Does that mean my porosity has chainged? How do you know your hair is normal porosity?

ps: I did do the float test multiple times, but my hair always floated on top, even when I was shure my hair was severely damaged.

By the way, my hair does get frizzy when I sweat a lot. Is that a sign of high porosity?

Float test is nonsense science, it is likely your porosity has reduced if you no longer bleach. Better to look at how your hair behaves or to have a hair analysis from Goosefootprints on Etsy or Komaza Care.

I do bleach, but much 'better' now. I used to do it at home, every 4 weeks, including putting bleach on the already-bleached hair. Now I have highlights, and I let them do by my stylist, 3 or 4 times a year. She said she only bleach the virgin hair.

I would love to have a hair analysis, but in live in the Netherlands (europe)!

You can mail your hair sample from Europe to the US, it's not like hair is heavy or bulky.

I only use one product in my hair to style as well. Any more and my hair gets super weighed down and flatter than usual

Oh and I have normal porosity. I learned that from the live curly live free hair analysis

My hair looks better with a gel and no leave in. I can't leave a bunch of products in my hair or it will look limp and greasy. I say do what makes your hair look good!

I live in Belgium and I did Goosefootprints without problems. Ordered through Etsy, sending my samples to the US in a fortified enveloppe cost €4.15. The enveloppe cost €1. I sent it half November, got my analysis results December 15th. If you're holding purely because you're in Europe, don't. It's totally worth it and Wendy is very helpful, thorough and nice. Seriously, my hair has improved so much in less than a month after getting my results back.

I was the same way.
I have dense, 3b, hair. When I first started going natural, my hair was dry and frizzy. I used a LOT of leave in and oil. After about 2 or three months my hair didn't need as much moisture as it did previously
I say all this to say, your hair was very dry; like when you are thirsty, you drink water and afterwards you feel refreshed; same goes for your hair. Your hair was "dehydrated" and you gave it something to "drink".

As for hair porosity, considering what I just said, your hair probably won't need as much moisture.
You know your hair. Listen to it.

I'm a gel-only for styling too. I have 2c-3a color-treated(but NOT bleached)hair, very dense, fine to medium in texture. Too many products "cocktailed" just leave my hair a dull, limp mess IMO.

If you have color treated hair, you probably don't have low porosity. I have high porosity on my ends, normal in the middle, and low on my roots (which I believe a lot of people probably have as well) and too many products weighed me down when I had super hard water. Now I have soft water and I can use 3x as much product and it looks great. I really believe water quality makes a difference, as well as ingredients in products, and how much you use of them. If gel only works for you, by a means do what works. Just make sure there aren't any drying alcohols, and you may want to deep condition regularly if you aren't using a leave in.
