It looks good! just be patient. after more than a year, my hair now blends from whitest in front to darkest in the back. You may be able to tone down the reddishness of that brown color by putting some red gold corrector in your conditioner.
Here's my hair more than a year ago

and here it is currently. You can see how it is darker in the back. Its all my natural color now.

Looks lovely! Comparison pics give me a good idea of how much growth to expect in around a year!

Thank you, crystal tips! I must tell you that I have always coveted your curl pattern and cut - just fabulous! Your gray looks terrific, too, by the way.

rustina -- that is exactly how i did it with the headband, which was a suggestion from the woman who used to color my hair. she also suggested the shimmer lights for the yellow in my hair. she has been a great help to me letting my natural color come through!
i bought stretchy headbands, too, different thicknesses, some of them on the lose side as after several weeks you kind of get headachy wearing headbands every day, or at least i did. the lose stretchy ones were a good change off.

What are some good stretchy headbands that stay put? I've been really frustrated when I've tried material/stretchy headbands. They start off okay for an hour or so, then they move too far back like they want to make a ponytail with my hair. When I use thicker material, it sort of lifts the hair at the nape of my neck up and away from my head, making a weird looking/feeling bulge there. Since my hair is thin and fine, should I try the ones that are about as thick as a ponytail holder? I've never tried those before because they looked dinky, but maybe that's what I need.

i was so DESPERATE for anything that would help me get through the growing-out phase, i bought headbands whenever something about them seemed good. they are also inexpensive, i'd get them at rite aid, cvs..... for me, i liked the thicker ones. i don't mind when they lift the hair off the nape of my neck, almost gives it an updo look. i also used satin covered plastic ones like the one in rustina's pic. whatever worked to keep me growing out the color.
experiment and find one the works for you.
i use the ones i did not like to hold my hair back to wash my face, put them to use! :-)

I have started to see elastic headbands in the stores now that are wider up at the top, where they go across your hair, and thin at the bottom where they go under your hair at the nape, rather than being one size all the way around. And they're being made in cool colors and patterns, too. I'll be darned if I can find a link to anything like it online right now, but keep an eye out anywhere you can find a decent selection of hair accessories, and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks crystal tips! Growing out the gray isn't easy, especially with darker hair. But I am so glad I let mine go gray naturally. I really like the way it looks, it saves me tons of time and money, and I just don't have to worry about it.

It has been such a long time since I stopped by to check up on the graying journey with you ladies. I caved, in that I switched from reddish brown to my more natural neutral ash with highlights. BUT, I'm thinking about going more of a gray ash and gray highlights, just to enjoy. Just don't know if I can do it, yet. Meanwhile, I'm going to keep enjoying your journeys for inspiration and potential strength.

banjo, your hair looks great! The multi-colored hair is part of the fun, IMO of growing it out. Definitely freeing!
I didn't get many compliments when I was doing it. Sometimes women would look at me and it made me self-conscious. I would try to remember to think to myself "yeah, you're looking because you wish YOU had that guts to do it, too!"
Your new growth is beautiful -- looks like shades of gray and your natural (a bit reddish?) color.
