I'm not even sure how to begin growing out my gray hair, because of the length. (see my avatar pic) I don't want it to look like I'm wearing a little gray cap. I'm thinking about not coloring my hair and using either a dark spray or Joan Rivers hair powder just on the roots at the top. How did you other long haired ladies do this?

Hi! Thought I would pop into the over 40s forum for the first time and figured this is a good thread. I'm 41ish!
I haven't decided if I want to embrace the gray or not. I grew up with dark blonde/ light brown hair...a bunch of different colors all blended.
The hair around my temples is growing in very soft and white. I have a few silvery ones throughout my crown. I am told they look like highlights but I just don't see what they see!
I just don't know. I keep saying I'm going to let it come in natural and afer a couple of inches, I change my mind and grab some dye. It doesn't help that my boyfriend is almost a decade younger than me either. I keep feeling like I need to look younger than him. He has a lot of silver but wears it short and you can't see it until up close.
If my hair would just come in all white and soft like my grandmother's is, I would be all over not fighting it!

Welcome, Wavedownsouth!
I totally do what you do. My fiance is 6 years younger than me. He doesn't want me to grow out the gray. I should have colored this weekend, but didn't. I think I'll hang out until after the holidays and see how it looks.

My sister (11 years older than me) was inspired by the look of my natural 50% silver to let her 90% silver go natural a few years ago. Her original color was dark brown and she had been dying it a med brown. To transition out she gradually shifted to a lighter and lighter brown, eventually going blonde and then to her natural almost-platinum. Her hair was shoulder length to start and is now waist length.

I saw another woman around my age at the farmer's market the other day and she had long curly very white hair. I was so jealous. I want MORE silver/grey/white hair. Mine hasn't changed in a long time. Same amount of grey as I've had for awhile now. : (

I've been to three shopping centres this week looking for my dye. Guess I'm still running!

Lotsawaves,
I know many people have used the Fanciful Rinse (not the Fanciful Roux, the Roux can stain the hair) in what ever color works for you. The Rinse is temporary color that washes right out.
I did not personally use it as my line of demarcation was not as great as some. I also wasn't sure how to incorporate that into the curlygirl method and it sounded messy to me, lol. My last color was a year ago and I did it cold turkey but cut alot of hair off. I have a little dye left on the ends now, need to update pics. I can't wait to have long hair again and now I get to see what it looks like curly. Seeing all the beautiful long haired curlies on here gives me something to look forward to! Thanks everyone for posting!
HTH!
I thought I'd mention, semi-permanent and temporary hair colors ARE permanent and don't wash out. That is what I've heard anyways.

I don't like my whites (and they are white and not gray). I'm 48 and have so much white hair against dark brown. I color my hair. If I don't, I look like I haven't washed my hair and of course, older.
But there are some women I've seen with beautiful white or gray hair that just looks great on them and shouldn't mess with it.

I embraced the gray several years ago. Funny thing is that I receive more compliments on my hair now than I ever did when I was younger!
