hysterectomy?

Like Tree12Likes

I had lupron about 2 months or so prior to my lap-assisted hysterectomy back in 1999. Lupron basically puts you into immediate (temporary) menopause. It pretty much stops the bleeding and starts the hot flashes - and any other symptom of menopause you can think of. The reason I did it was so that my hemoglobin could build back up enough to allow a safe level for surgery. Otherwise I would have required a blood transfusion prior to the surgery. The recovery from a lap-assisted hysterectomy wasn't nearly as bad as the recovery from my previous 3 c-sections. In fact, I had relatives from out of town stay with us the week after my lap-assisted surgery. (I do NOT recommend that, however!) Best of luck with whatever you both decide.
2Poodles Southeast PA
fine, med porosity, normal elasticity
Currently using the following 2 - 3 x/week:
Living Proof Perfect Hair Day suphate-free Poo, cone-free CO and styling treatment, plus KCCC

So....still bleeding. Follow up appt next Monday. Dr mentioned Lupron to stop the bleeding for a few months and we could maybe try ablation again. Side effects for that look horrendous! The fibroid surgery I don't think could be laparoscopic cause of the size of them. The hysterectomy could tho...so it looks like the recovery from fibroid surgery would be worse...and will most likely not be permanent cause of my age. If I can stay on NuvaRing and progesterone a bit longer...I can push the surgery back to Presidents' Day in feb. With weekends and all I'd have abt 17 days recover time. Any thoughts?

I understand any kind of laproscopic hysterectomy is supposed to get you 4 weeks off work. (Longer for old fashioned abdominal incision.) Is it absolutely necessary you go back so soon? Will your surgeon go along w/ such a short recovery?

Is a laproscopic-assisted vaginal procedure a possibility?

Where do you live? Are there any boardies near you? Is your family totally unabe to help? Can you get one friend per day to stop by?

I know the new guy is offerring to help. And that is awesome. But try to have a back up plan and someone he can alternate with.

And abt keeping the cervix I was reading in that...sometimes bladder prolapse with cervix...they question whether it could affect ur sex drive if u get it out...and I think u still have mini periods. I'm gonna talk to dr abt that too...cause I do have hpv....I wonder if he recommends getting that taken too. I have pretty strong pc muscles...lots of kegals. So that may help too I think.

I guess fibroids are bloodier to cut up than a uterus?

What's happening to you on Monday?

For me, Monday is hysterectomy day...

Oh god keep me posted....good luck Spider!

For me I go to dr Monday...discuss options and grill him about whether or not he can do it laparoscopic. Then I'd tell him about when I could do it...and the time off I'd have to see if that would be ok.

Please keep me posted! I know just with my surgery....I laid on the couch...barely moved...just slept...kept my phone charger by the couch and browsed the Internet with that. No energy for anything else....truth be told I really don't have energy now. I'm not sure if its cause I'm still heeling or because I've lost muscle mass from not exercising at all. I'm gonna do a little cardio at the gym tonight...elliptical maybe. The progesterone stopped the bleeding for now...I may be able to deal like this for a few months till I can do the hysterectomy.

Also Spider, are u keeping ur cervix?

I may have to bite the bullet and move try to get the surgery sooner...cause what stops the bleeding now...is progesterone and I think that may have cancer links. We got a lot of cancer in my family.

I will def keep you guys posted.

Do you have any family or close, close friends nearby who can check on you?

Still deciding about my cervix. Leaning towards getting rid of it. I just don't want anymore bleeding from anywhere down there. Not in terms of this unidentified bleeding, periods or anything...or any type of vaginal discharge. And no chance of cancer.

So always dry down there except for during sex?

But having it removed makes recovery worse and there is a greater risk for damaging the bladder and having organ prolapse in the future. And a slightly shorter vagina that will need to be stretched back out.

And a possibility of sexual dysfunction w/ either one.

Ugh...decisions.

Ugh...this whole sitch sucks! I have a few people that will check on me I guess. And I was looking at the cervix removal too...cause I have hpv and they've caused abnormal apps for a few years after dr thought it would have cleared up. My nurse friend got hers removed and she has no sexual issues at all. Occasionally a little dry but lube works...and I always seem to have that issue anyways. Maybe getting all my plumbing fixed would help that.

So my drs appt was today. Dr thinks the NuvaRing and progesterone will stop the bleeding...spotting too. Thinks its just too early after surgery and d&c. He said if this stops the bleeding that I'll just stay on this regimen. If bleeding starts again around when it's time to change NuvaRing... Or spotting just never ends...I'll go back to dr and schedule radical hysterectomy. He said they'd take cervix too due to hpv.

So I had the hysterectomy on Monday and I'm feeling great.

The worst part, by FAR, was my reaction to the general anesthesia. That always messes me up and this was the worst! I was nauteous, and barfing and dry heaving and miserable, making myself dizzy and headachy every time I threw up. My dr wanted to release me a few hours after surgery but I chose to stay overnight bc of my nausea.

Other than that it was a piece of cake!

I left the hospital Tuesday, about 11 am, and then we went out to lunch.

The bloating and swollen abdomen are getting on my nerves, tho!

And ugh, my dr gave me vids of the surgery. OMG!

glad it went well for you.

fyi -- i hope you never need anesthesia again, but they can give you an anti-nausea medication in iv before surgery. have no idea why they don't do it automatically nor offer it, but if you know about it and ask for it, they will give it to you and it works!
