Default my teeth are getting old

how about this one? i have a discolored tooth and tried bleaching it. my dentist told me it wont work. now he is suggesting i get either laminates or luminiers on my 6 front teeth-i also have 'black triangle disease" which means the gums are receding a bit and there s more space betw the teeth. so if i look at pics of myself from now and from the old days--i have some in fotki under pre-cg--my teeth were pretty nice in my 1968 blonde picture. now they are kind of "eh" i guess--not horrible really but not great. i hate the whole idea of cosmetic dentistry--pain, money, hassle, but am thinking of it. have any of you had this work done? it would take care of the discoloration as well as the gaps but i am concerned about not being able to see decay w xrays any more and just the yukiness of it all. what do you all think?
TIA

I don't have veneers --but I know 4-5 women who do. To me they look fake --just like dentures. Their teeth look very large .....like Osmond teeth! --and too perfect.

I think you're being too hard on yourself. You look great --at all ages!

BTW, your dogs are beautiful! Are they long haired German Shepherds?

You have a very natural look, Banjo, and it's beautiful on you. I think your teeth suit your look. Teeth do age, I notice it in my own teeth. Big fake white teeth look...well, fake.

I so-o agree! Banjo, maybe you don't have to do a thing! More important is basic good dental health/hygiene. Of course your dentist is suggesting the treatments he is because he will make more money off of these. With the veneer or laminate, maybe just that one tooth, instead of six? Just a thought here. Also, the quality of the work of the veneer or laminate can make a big difference. My husband had a veneer put over a tooth that was chipping, but it wasn't that great of a one, and broke anyway. Here in SF, he had another one done which is much better and looks very natural.
Re tooth-whitening in general, used judiciously, it DOES make a big difference in one's overall look. But the trick is to do just the right amount of lightening, and no more, usually just a few shades. Depending on one's coloring, some people have more ivory-colored teeth(I'm in that group)and some have whiter, cooler-toned teeth. So the mad rush to blindingly-white smiles by several means has often resulted in the "chiclets" look, way overdone, IMO. But teeth just brightened up just a few shades do look good and quite natural.

ITA. Banjo, you're a "natural" beauty. IMHO, it would go against your "natural" grain to get a whole lot of unnatural looking teeth.
I think Cara's suggestion of getting only the tooth that really needs it capped to just the right color to blend in with your other teeth is a great idea. Have you asked your dentist if he can do that?

i am getting lumineers on my teeth in the next 2 weeks--found a great cosmetic dentist. he did a minimal shaving of my present teeth, no temporaries and they look better already. very conservative option, 6 front teeth on top thats it. i am really excited--will post pics when done--banjo

well i have done it! i now have lumineers on my 6 front teeth. at first they seemed too big but now i am used to them. funny thing is that nobody notices that my teeth are different exc those who know about the process i've been going thru. my midline is still off center and my smile is not perfect but i am so happy to be rid of my black triangles and recession at the roots. it has also decreased my sensitivity which is a bonus. i have before and after pics in my new fotki album. the nice thing is that the dentist did not have to shave my own teeth down to points like they do for crowns as the lumineers are very thin. so i feel like i look a bit younger now and have no regrets.

They look great!! Now I want some! If I didn't already owe my regular dentist $1600 I'd be off to get me some. They look very natural, not like those big perfectly even teeth so many seem to have nowadays.

They look wonderful! I'm going to have to get them pretty soon too. I've been a teeth-grinder my whole life and I've worn them way down at age 38. Was it pretty pain-free since they didn't have to grind your old ones down?

Enjoy your new smile!

jeep your hair looks great!! lolo, there was no real pain, he did have to numb me for either impressions or putting in the new veneers as my teeth had to be really dry and i am very sensitive so i kept pulling my lip down. but basically it is not painful (except to the wallet)

hey banjocurl,

I'd love to see your new lumineers...can you post pics here?...I can't view your fotki album. I recently had my dentist bleach my teeth. They've ALWAYS been discolored...for as long as I can remember, even as a child. I'm happy with the results...they're certainly not terrific, but much improved. The lumineer route sounds interesting. Thanks! and I'm so glad you're tickled with the results!

the password is banjo and is at the bottom of my signature in all my msgs--now it should be easy to see that album and others too. thanks for the compliments! i am very happy so far. a couple of the veneers fell out at first because i had lip balm on and some got on the teeth when he glued them on-he did not realize that until much later. now hopefully they are on and will stay on. he says that he used to teach the technique of putting on lumineers and he's never had any fall out in 10+ yrs except one other person's veneer. so keeping my fingers crossed and remembering not to adjust my metal fingerpicks with my teeth

They look great! To be honest, I never noticed the spaces in your teeth when we met, but I can see a difference in the photos. They look natural, not big and too perfect, if you know what I mean. Good for you! And you didn't do anything to the bottom teeth, but it looks like you did. I guess it's camouflaged?
