Ideas for my 2.5yr old

I recently found this site through a friend. This is my first time really dealing with curly hair (my son is curly too but he's alot easier, even though his curls are alittle tighter lol). My daughter looks to be around a 3a mostly, but has some stragglers that are a 2b. She has nice curls but if I comb her hair it just frizzes or mattes out, etc.
I normally wash her hair with baby wash (some disney one right now but normally suave 3-in-1) and put a tiny bit of conditioner in (she has thin hair, onlything she got form me besides color hair wise lol). I normally don't comb it because, even with conditioner it frizzes, sometimes I comb it with a wider toothed baby comb. She rarely has pony's or barretts or any of that in since she wont' keep them in, and she sleeps on a faux silk pillow case.
I have a 2 1/2 yr old daughter and also a 2 1/2 yr old step daughter, mine has 3b/3c hair and the other has 3a/3b hair. Learning about porosity has helped me manage their hair, since they both have low porosity I don't use much hair products after I wash. However since curly hair can dry/frizz easier than wavy or straight hair I condition their hair at least once a week using Shea Moisture Moisture Retention conditioner which their hair loves. After their wash I lightly detangle their hair using a regular wide tooth comb and apply a leave in conditioner mixed with jojoba and coconut oil and thats that. You might do well with shampoo'ing and conditioning her hair twice a week or more depending on how fast her natural hair (sebum) oils saturate her hair since she has mostly a 2 type texture. Don't comb or brush curls while dry and always keep frizzy/dry/curly hair moisturized. You can use a light conditioner with natural ingredients mixed with a tsp of very light oil since she has 2 type hair texture (grapeseed is extremely light). Or if a light oil weighs her hair down you can make your own natural gel using flax seeds, ingredients vary depending on how thick you want the consistency to be. Some people use 1/4 cup of flaxseeds mixed in 2 cups of water. If you want the consistency to be very light use less flaxseeds and don't let it simmer in the pot (use a big one to let the seeds settle) for more than 10 minutes. Flaxseeds can be found at Whole Foods, and most health food stores (GNC and Vitamin Shoppe may not carry them however). They can vary in color from black/brown/golden tones. That is an all natural chemical free option for using a light moisturizer for your daughters hair which also helps to tame frizz. To make it less complicated you can also use a light all natural leave in conditioner mixed with some water in a water bottle and use it as a spritzer.
Inimitable likes this.

Thank you
All bets off on finding the perfect products for the curls - focusing on regrowing (50%) hair loss due to

I also have a 2.5 year old curlie.. I find it hard trying to see if her hair likes moisture or protein as she's always rubbing her head on the couches or on the bed, it gets dry and frizzy easily no matter how much sealing I do.. ..

Atm she has a moisture/protein leave in with Shea butter and coconut oil mix sealant.. but I haven't tried gel before on her hair.. do you think it makes a difference? Mine sleeps on a mulberry silk pillowcase too but wakes up looking like krusty the clown .. do I need to do a night spritz before she goes to bed?? And what about 2nd and 3rd day hair? Do I need to do a spritz or another leave in routine??

waist length hair & finding a sexual cheapo leave in conditioner for both me and my daughter
Moisturize her hair really well (like with water & a leave in) & then use a grease like Blue Magic to seal in the moisture. I wash & redo this every few days. My hair is like hers in that way but I fixed it .

Yes, so you can restyle when you want but the moisture is still there & sealed in. Either grease or a pomade.

Grease?. I live in Australia and never heard of it.. is it like vaseline?? Um like petroleum jelly?? I know pomade but don't know much silicone free ones here lol.

I think I will def keep her hair well moisturised .. I bought kc knot today and curling custard online I'm hoping that will work for her too.. I never knew hair would have such a big learning curve lol especially different types of hair..

Grease is basically stuff that contains mineral oil & the like. They don't require sulfates to remove but they do require shampoo with ingredients like coco' bentaine I believe. I've never used vaseline in my hair but I have used stuff that has the same ingredient but softer.

hmm I don't think they sell grease in Australia .. saying that I think my daughter might have a mild allergy to Shea butter, I've noticed a rash on the back of her neck where her curls stop.. I will stop using it and see if it was the Shea..

My kccc will be coming soon so I might use that as a sealant instead of the Shea/coconut mix.. .. if not I always have coconut oil.

a lot of times people avoid products that have mineral oil in them because not only does it seal moisture from getting out, but it also seals moisture from getting in.

not sure what type of hair your daughter has, but hopefully you can find sucess with the kinky curly products. around the time my oldest was 1.5 or 2 is when i tried to start looking for products that would work for her and she's been using knot today and the curling custard ever since (she's 4 now). she has very fine, relatively thin, 3a/b hair and i've yet to actually achieve 2nd day curly hair with her.
I am a bit iffy by putting mineral oil on her hair.. but I will see how the kccc works first, if it doesn't I will def have to find alternatives..

I think children's daily activities make there hair the way it is.. I know my DD does so much crazy stuff its so hard to tame her hair, glad I am not the only one..

I got knot today and curling custard today.. I used them on her hair and so far so good.. her hair seems to be very well moisturised its still kind of poofy in some areas but definitely not as bad as it usually is.. not to mention it smells very nice but cost me around $60 aud for both including postage.. big bummer! Are there any alternatives? Cheaper alternatives!?

Queen Helene has a curly custard that's great and inexpensive (9.00) for 16 oz. If I'm not mistaken. I found it at Whole Foods right by the Kinky Curly.
