Starting Curly Girl on my Daughter

I have read the curly girl book and want to start this on my 6 yr old because it seems like she is losing her curls to frizz. I want to get her into a good routine over the summer so when she starts first grade it will be old hat.

Sarah has almost waist length hair (when wet) but we are going to get her hair cut at a salon recommended on here in a few weeks (probably will still be somewhat long). Sarah is very tender headed and *hates* tangles so she will be thrilled I won't be brushing her hair but her hair tangles sooo easily. Plus she still gets food and sand and dirt in her hair regularly. She will also be swimming a lot in the summer. I have no idea how this will all work out with morning hair, etc. but I don't want her to grow up to hate her hair like her cousin!

Anyway, I am looking for any good tips for children (especially around her age). What are your favorite products?

Thanks!

Hi Sunni,
Wow you sound similar to me- my daughter is nearly 6 and has the same hair type!, her hair isnt quite as long as your daughters but very similar, and I have straight hair, so I'm learning too

I've been on this site for around a year now and been CG since then, I was having problems with breakage, frizz and tangles so I decided to try the Curly girl method with her hair, I have straight hair also so I had no idea what to do, I started by co-washing with a cheap CG conditioner (suave or vo5) and then conditioning with a really good conditioner,

The conditioners I can reccommend are Karens Body Beautiful hair and Biolage Conditioning Balm, I havent tried much else as I'm in the UK and don't have much access to good products

Then I either use Karens body beautiful hair milk or nectar as a leave in or Kinky curly knot today (great detangler!)

I also low poo once a week with Jessicurl HCC which is excellant really gentle, Ive ordered some Kinky curly come clean to try also, I find I can't get away with just co-washing as har hair just gets too tangley

I'm yet to find a get or styling product I can use in her hair, I just hate her hair to look prouducty!, Ive ordered some Kinky curly curling custard so looking foward to trying that will let you know how it goes

Nice to see another mum with a curly girl on here! please feel free to PM me if you need any advice

Goodness, your daughter's hair looks a lot like my daughters!

I went out and got some Suave Naturals Coconut conditioner today and a big detangling comb. Tonight we are going to use a clarifying shampoo (just this once) and from here on out we will just co-wash. I think I will try some Herbal Essences Body Envy Gel and plopping her hair in a T-shirt and leaving it overnight.

I am not sure what to use to condition her hair, we have used Nexxus regularly but I think her hair may be over conditioned and coated right now. For a while I may just use some Aloe gel/water and spray on to refresh.

I definitely want to order the Kinky Curly No Knot and Custard. Both these products sound wonderful! What of you think of the Biolage Conditioning Balm?

Thanks!

Yeah they do have similar looking hair!, your daughter is so cute

I really like Biolage Conditioning Balm and it doubles up as a leave-in/curl cream

Karens Body Beautiful products are amazing, I use the Milk as a conditioner and leave in the nectar as a leave in

I must say my favorite product at the moment is Kinky Curly Knot Today it leaves her hair so soft and curly and seems to tame the frizz

I'm really jelous that you can get so many good products in the US I'm a bit limited in the UK and have had to ask a US curly to send me some Kinky curly products

let me know how you get on with co-washing I'm really wanting to try JUST co-washing without having to low poo, suave is a good conditioner to try although I can't get it over here, I use V05 strawberries and cream (when I can get hold of it) thats really good and very detangling,

Her hair may benefit from aloe vera as a lot of curlys love it on here

Good luck

i really like california baby calming conditioner for my daughter/ her hair is significantly shorter than both of your daughters, but it works very well at getting out tangles and it doubles as a leave in. deva curl one condition also works really well. it seems like it melts her tangles away.

i like kinky curly knot today (i prefer the california baby) and i really like the kinky curly curling custard. i also really like curly hair solutions curl keeper. her hair is very shiny with both and her curls are enhanced, more so with the curl keeper, but neither one leave her hair looking like she has product in it.
So, we picked up some Suave Clarifier and Coconut Conditioner for co-wash. I also grabbed some FX Booster Gel, and we have some KCCC and KCKT on order. I still haven't figured out a good once a week deep conditioner or that best styling items. We also picked upa good detangling comb.

Wanting to try the Botticelli Flax gel, Karens body beautiful hair milk or nectar, and Biolage Conditioning BalmCurl. For Styling maybe Curl Keeper or something else to help curls tighten and form. Also worry about hold and frizz.

Hi Sunni,

Just been looking at pics of sarah in your fokti and my daughter came up behind me and said 'mummy is that me??!'
I said 'no but that little girl has gourgous curly hair like you!' I don't think she's seen anyone with hair so similar to hers!

Is the CG routine going okay? have you had your first co-wash?
