Amendment 1 Passed in North Carolina

I am so disgusted with this. I have been wanting to move away for a while now, but I admittedly became complacent and stayed here longer than I intended. The passing of this amendment just gave me more incentive to put a plan together, get my butt in gear, and get away from here as soon as I can. There's nothing like using religion, fear, and bigotry as the foundation for a constitutional amendment. I feel like we (America in general, not just NC) have been taking some giant steps backwards when it comes to certain people's civil liberties lately. Sometimes it's hard to believe this nonsense is actually happening in the year 2012.
ditto.
The only thing I can say without getting the NC Language Police on my case is - grrrrr.

Thanks for understanding ladies. The sad thing is North Carolina already had a ban on gay marriage. They passed it years ago. This amendment actually goes further and stipulates that the only legal union the state will recognize is a marriage between one man and one woman. Meaning that no civil unions and no domestic partnerships will be legally recognized. This affects gay couples of course, but it also affects straight but unmarried couples who would previously be covered under domestic partnership laws. This means that the state and county governments will no longer acknowledge domestic partnerships in any way. The amendment just passed last night, and today there is already a county taking steps to dismantle the domestic partner benefits that the county provides for both same sex and unmarried straight couples. They're not wasting any time.
As a fellow North Carolinian, all we can hope is that it gets overturned because of the full faith and credit clause. I'm ashamed. Though glad my county voted against. A little education goes a long way.

I am in no way trying to portray our counties as being better than any other, but those of us in NC know that the campaign ads were heavily targeted towards more rural and more religious communities for a reason. They made it appear that voting for the amendment was voting to ban gay marriage, and played on people's religious beliefs, and irrational fears. They had ads featuring bible quotes and preachers telling people they had to vote for it to "save marriage." They also played heavily to the black religious communities (I am black but not religious), and the sad reality of homophobia that's still an issue for a number of black people. Many people from all of these groups just blindly believed what they were told instead of educating themselves about what was really in the amendment. You're absolutely right, a little education certainly does go a long way.
By the way rolltidegal...should I assume you're a Crimson fan?
