over the past year, a lot of ink has been spilled and pixels pixellated in the cause of trying to figure out why that man has become a candidate in this election.

i have a couple, some of which are tied to the conservative party here in Canada, and i will post them. but i'd be interested in what y'all think and what our Western society can do going forward to combat the negativity, racism, sexism and xenophobia underlying the conservative movements in North America and Europe.

i am incredibly grateful that large swathes of the Canadian population rejected the dystopian view of the Harperites last year.

more to come....

a "Tweet storm" i read this morning:

1. Today marked my 250K mile driven in last three years, around the US, visiting places few visit.

2. That includes time spent in inner city neighborhoods long devastated by drugs, racism, and poverty.

3. It includes time spent in counties in Appalachia stripped of almost everything.

4. It includes time spent in border towns in Texas filled with immigrants looking for a better future

5. This comes after spending 6 years getting a PhD (Physics), and 20 years working on Wall Street (Bond trading)

6. The notion that we live in a fair, equitable, meritocratic society is absolute utter BS. We have two very very different societies.

7. We have the educated, white-collar folks (like I used to work with), who run everything, and then we have everyone else.

8. Everyone else is folks who live in those towns I visit. Folks who are falling further and further behind, and really nobody cares about.

9. There are inner city blacks whose frustrations are long documented, but mostly demeaned by conservatives as being due to their “culture”

10. You have working class whites, whose frustrations are now being documented, & are now being demeaned by liberals as being due to racism

11. In both cases those demeaning them are part of the “elites”, the ones who have largely built the system we have.

12. They are the ones who have removed themselves from the poor, socially, economically, and geographically.

13. They have supported winner takes all financialization, the devaluation of labor via outsourcing, the ruthless pursuit of efficiency.

14. Now those left behind are angry, venting, sick of living in towns that offer little chance for advancement or meaning.

15. What does the elites do? They say, ‘Them angry folks are racist”

16. Forgetting that racism isn’t something without context. That fascism, nationalism, thrives by preying on the angry. The bitter.

17. They do this from the comfort of their offices in DC, or NYC, or London

18. Just this week I was in Danville Va. and Georgetown SC. Two smaller cities with empty factories. And nothing else

19. Danville had textile mills whose rusting hulk looms over the town. As a Trump fan said, “Nothing to do here now but to sit & get angry”

20. The other thing to do in Danville is to ***** about the “blacks’. The blacks, half the town, sit and ***** about being *****ed about.

21. It isn’t a good scene. But that isn’t surprising. Because nothing is working for towns like Danville. Nothing.

22. They are so so so removed from Manhattan. And DC. And LA. And they know it.

23. They know that **** is rigged. That their towns factories will move, their towns centers will die, but Wall Street will get bailed out

24. They also know **** is rigged against them socially. They know the “elites” don’t value them. Mock them. Tell them just to move

25. Move where? Moving is giving up on one of the few things they have. Their family. Their roots. Some also can't move. Because obligations

26. Because moving means competing on a playing field built by the elites primarily for the elites.

It means assuming another set of values

27. Sure. Some will move. Some should move. Primarily the younger folks who buy into the system. Get an education. Get out.

28. For the rest. Those not great at playing the school game. Those who place value on more nebulous things than $s.

Chris stopped there, but there was a response from a local economics professor that lead me to this thread on Twitter:

That @Chris_arnade tweetstorm is a must, must read. I hope someone storifies it. 1/n

I saw exactly what @chris_arnade talks about when I taught Community College in Dansville, NY, over a decade ago. 2/n

Community was devastated when the major employer (a tire factory) relocated. Elites kept saying "why don't they move?" 3/n

Gee, maybe because it's because these people owned one asset (their home), which was massively devalued. 4/n

Who, exactly, is looking to move to a small town with a large unemployment problem? Every seller needs a buyer. People forget that. 5/n

When I tour rural Southwestern Ontario, I see a lot of the same forces at play & a lot of the same political views. 6/n

Canadian chattering classes think that Trump/Brexit type forces don't exist in Canada. Completely and utterly wrong 7/n

I don't think Ottawa pols, media (incl. Parliamentary Press Gallery) gets this. At all. They live in a completely different world. 8/8
