How Racism Works

I think for the most part, yeah, it's fear. Coupled with ignorance and indoctrination.
"And politically correct is the worst term, not just because it’s dismissive, but because it narrows down the whole social justice spectrum to this idea that it’s about being polite instead of about dismantling the oppressive social structure of power.
Fun Fact: When you actively avoid being “PC,” you’re not being forward-thinking or unique. You’re buying into systems of oppression that have existed since before you were even born, and you’re keeping those systems in place."
Stolen.
I was thinking about this subject this past weekend. Where do you ladies think racism comes from? I honestly think it's fear, I'm not trying to justify it AT ALL by saying that, but I think the root cause of racism is fear. I think that's why certain races decided they were better than others because they feared them.

I agree with Micelle's response and would add that it seems to be human nature to fear and thus hate anything that is different than yourself. It's something that needs continual work.

The videos made me physically ill. I agree racism still does exist but now in a sugar-coated way. I have seen/heard racism from whites, blacks, asian, native americans, and hispanics and it's really sad to see this. At the beginning of the election I didn't know who to vote for (not into politics) but now I am voting for Obama/Biden. I have absolutely NO respect for McCain/Palin at all. They're clearly racist and I have no patience for ignorant people.

I do have racists in my family. I caught on early as a kid because I went to a diverse school so I never had a problem with someone of a different nationality/race. My mom grew up in a different time where she saw and experienced racism play out & the aftermath in the south. So you can imagine my mom is very prejudice against white people but what I don't understand is her problem with asians, hispanics, and native americans. In her mind black people are the better race and you can't tell her any different but she's quiet about it. I first noticed something wrong when I was a kid when she would take me to a beauty supply store she would call it the c word store or the chinese store when they were clearly vietnamese. Another incident was in middle school a year after 9/11. My then friend AG who's caucasian got into an arguement with my friend MK over something small and it was a small arguement until AG yelled tell your people to stop bombing us. To make a long story short we weren't friends after that day.

I just think it's sad that one country has so much hate for each other. But what do you expect from a country built from hate. I do believe we as a country have made some progress. But I agree alot of hate comes from fear and ignorance.
