Palin and McCain Halloween display

Hmmm, I don't know. I don't think this is a good idea. If it were an Obama mannequin people would be in an uproar and with good reason.

WeHo Mayor Asks For Removal Of Palin Effigy

WEST HOLLYWOOD Jeffrey Prang, mayor of West Hollywood, asked a resident Monday to remove a controversial effigy of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin hanging by a noose outside the resident's home.

"I respect that we all have the right to freedom of speech," Prang said. "However, with that right comes responsibility. While these residents have the legal right to display Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin in effigy, I strongly oppose political speech that references violence -- real or perceived.

The display includes a mannequin has been outfitted to look like Palin --with glasses, a beehive wig and a red business suit -- and is hanging from a noose outside a WeHo residence. The display also depicts a devilish John McCain emerging from flames.

"We see people stopping and taking pictures, and the tour buses are stopping and slowing down ... people reach out and take pictures," display creator Chad Michael Morrisette told KCAL9.

Morrisette conceded an image of Barack Obama being hanged by a noose wouldn't go over well. "I know if we had done it with Obama, people would've probably thrown things through our windows," Morrisette said. "The image of a hanged black man is a lot more intense than the image of a hanged white woman -- for our country -- in the history of our country."

Morrisette said his display might be unacceptable any other month, but his subjects are fair game during the Halloween season.

"It should be seen as art and it should be seen within the month of October. It is Halloween. It's time to be scary. It's time to be spooky," Morrisette said.

yeah, not cool

eche428 10-29-2008 10:43 AM

I saw this on TV last night. This is so disgusting. Not cool at all. :angry7:

RedCatWaves 10-29-2008 10:45 AM

I think it's wrong and should be removed immediately. I'd like to see the homeowner do it himself, just out of decency, but if he refuses, it's possibly a hate crime and legal steps should be taken to force him to remove it. Lynching is wrong, for both sides.

ScrappyTam 10-29-2008 10:47 AM

It is true that this is Halloween and some stuff like this shouldn't be taken quite as seriously. It is also true that the image of a black man hanging has different undertones due to our nation's past.

However, that being said, I am not fond of the hanging Palin. Even though she disturbs me, I don't like the hanging of public figures. As, for McCain coming out of the chimney...I don't have a problem with that. It is Halloween and it does not have the connotation of the hanging.

eche428 10-29-2008 10:47 AM

They interviewed the two guys who put it up and they think because it's the Halloween season it's not a big deal at all. They were acting like "what? why are people upset?" but you could tell they knew exactly what they were doing and exactly what reaction they'd get. Pigs!

wavezncurlz 10-29-2008 10:53 AM

hmm...what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
This is UNCOOL for anyone. I do not like it nor can I condone it. Authorities should do something.

gemini 10-29-2008 10:54 AM

This is wrong and in really poor taste.

MichelleBFT 10-29-2008 12:10 PM

Legally, I don't know that it's a problem, and I'm not sure it should be.

Personally, I'd hope a person would have more sense than that.

SarcasmIsBeauty 10-29-2008 12:30 PM

As much as I can't stand Palin, I do think its wrong. They should have done something else rather than hang her, its not tasteful at all.

Springcurl 10-29-2008 01:04 PM

It's wrong.

What is wrong with people..gah!:angry7:

And for the record this sort of display has been done with images of Obama as well.

Why are people so dumb?

Speaking of Halloween displays, I saw this story on a local news broadcast:

Umm....wait a minute? If a white person hung a black mannequin they would most likely be charged with a hate crime. Why in this instance should it be any different?

Oh wait!.... I know! I know! Because with the left there is always a double standard. :angel9:

This was done in poor taste and no it's not just because I am for the right side of issues.

Come-on Notegal! Most everyone who has responded to this thread has agreed that it's wrong and should be dealt with by authorities. There is no double standard!

I posted a thread about a similar Obama effigy and there wasn't an arrest there either.

Wrong is wrong is wrong. If we need to modify laws to make people pay, then we should advocate for that. But I repeat, there is no double standard here.

CurlyGina2 10-29-2008 04:24 PM

I saw Olbermann blasting this person last week. NOT cool.

Oh, and Notegal, there have been Obama effigies, and as far as I know, no hate crimes charged.

eche428 10-29-2008 04:41 PM

Lordy! Get over yourself, Notegal. EVERYONE on this thread thinks this is horrible! WTF? Are you incapable of being a grown up?

Guide34 10-29-2008 04:59 PM

All of us think it's wrong.

Way to go overboard there.

My boyfriend and I had a lively debate on this issue on the car ride to work this a.m. Although I'm definitely NOT a republican and I can't stand Palin and McCain, I still think this is wrong. And to try to make light of the fundamental message behind it "just because it's Halloween" doesn't make it any less offensive. Unfortunately, my boyfriend disagreed. :angry2:
