Default On the Oregon ballot--

Apparently there was a measure on the Oregon ballot to limit the number of years in school a student can spend studying another language to two.

Now, it got defeated. So, awesome.

But...

What.

The.

FU(K?!?!?!?

Seriously? We're so petrified of what, multiculturalism, illegal immigration, something else? That we're willing to limit how much of another language we're willing to teach our kids???

Anyone else think that's as f-ed up as I do??

My first thought was that maybe it was trying to persecute Hispanic students. My aunt was mad one day that her daughter's school had alot of Hispanic kids and they devoted a lot of time for ESL courses. It offended me because those kids are Americans too! The schools need to serve everyone's needs.

The blurb I read about it made it out to be solely an "OMIGAWD THE ILLEGALS ARE TAKING OVER!!!!!!111!!111" kinda thing.

Which just makes my brain bleed.

What?! That's completely ridiculous.

I'd be so upset if I could only take two years of a language...

That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. The world is becoming a smaller place every day. If anything they should be giving incentives for people to take MORE language courses.

I heard someone speak on that on NPR radio. It was to limit ESL to 2 years, not a foreign language. ESL has become such a crutch, that we end up paying 12 years of it for each student, when they really could conceivably learn English in 2 years. And all that money is at the expense of teaching foreign languages to native English speakers.
