Facebook and politics

How does one deal with FaceBook friends who not only disagree with your politics but makes fun of it? I'm all for disagreement. I have a few FB friends who make fun of my political beliefs...not to me personally...let me be clear. If they were targeting me, I would not have them as FB friends. But they are mocking beliefs that I happen to believe in.
I usually choose to ignore them, but it's just getting so old. Sometimes, depending on who it is, I will give them another perspective...but I see FB as being more light-hearted, not really a forum for debate.

How do you or how would you handle something like that?

This happened to me last week, and it was really uncool. I feel you.

Mostly I just try to ignore it. If it gets out of hand I'd ignore the person being an arse. I agree with you; no ones FB status should be a forum for political taunting. Discussion, sure, but really I think its inappropriate.
"And politically correct is the worst term, not just because it’s dismissive, but because it narrows down the whole social justice spectrum to this idea that it’s about being polite instead of about dismantling the oppressive social structure of power.
Fun Fact: When you actively avoid being “PC,” you’re not being forward-thinking or unique. You’re buying into systems of oppression that have existed since before you were even born, and you’re keeping those systems in place."
Stolen.
Here's my honest opinion. Please don't think I'm trying to be a beyotch.

I am not on any social networking sites. But as I understand it, FB friends are permitted to comment on your page thingy? If people are going to put themselves, their opinions, their lives, and personal views and details out there in cyberspace, some people might respond in ways that might be annoying.

I guess if you don't like their mocking comments, can't you de-friend them?

I realize I'm not much help because as I said, I am not a facebook, myspace, twitter kind of person. I won't even pretend to know the etiquette on those kinds of sites, but mocking comments seems to be the accepted norm on the internet, no?
I just ignore them; if they get obnoxious enough, I'll hide them from my newsfeed or unfriend them altogether (I've done both). I like FB for the lighthearted social interaction, not running political commentary.

I have this problem with my husband's aunt. She drives me nuts and just about everyone ignores her on facebook when she post her crazy stuff. She's a nice lady but she believes in some really stupid stuff. The worst part is when she tries to fight with you over it. I think just about everyone refuses to comment on those post.
I ignore posts on matters I disagree with. It's just easier. If I felt like having a discussion I would say something--if they are putting their opinion out there I'm allowed to respond. But if I mind SEEING it that much, then I mind being their friend, and I'll defriend them. If I can deal with being their friend in spite of the differences, then I can deal with seeing it written now and then... that's life.

Oh, honey, do I feel your pain! All these old high school "friends" found me on FB and, well, I'll put it this way: I now remember why I moved a thousand miles away!

First I ignored it, then I challenged a couple of the people who really posted crazy, ignorant, intolerant sh** up there. Finally, I hid them from my newsfeed. Life is too short. I won't change their minds, and it just upsets me. I feel like it's rude to confront them -- since it's their page, and they can say what they want -- but some of the stuff they post is so awful that I feel like I HAVE to challenge it if I see it. So I'm happier if I don't see it.

If I actually knew them better, I might try to engage in dialogue with them..... but they were borderline friends as is.

(I have to admit, though -- every now and then I "unhide" them, just to see what's up there. It's like a painful scab I can't stop picking at....)
Someone I was pretty good friends with in college does this on a regular basis. He posts links and videos with inflammatory comments about stupid liberals and such, and at least once he's publicly called me and a couple others out. He routinely baits his Democrat and liberal friends.

It's gotten to the point where I just skip over his newsfeed items because he makes me so angry. I've considered blocking him, but he's not an all-around bad guy and I still have fond memories of good times in school. There's a line, and he's put his toes up to it a couple times but hasn't yet crossed it.

I dropped a person whose beliefs were totally opposite of mine.
I think I'm going to hide their posts (not put them on "ignore" or block them) for awhile. I need a break from the constant a-holeness that some of them are portraying.

Thanks everybody.

I will hide someone who is obnoxious or drop them completely (I've dropped 2 friends for that reason). The college I attended attracts mostly those whose political viewpoints oppose mine. Several of my college friends (and military ones) have posted statuses I disagree with. As long as I'm not repeatedly turned off, I ignore it. I might vent to someone else, but that's it. I generally don't try to start arguments or debates on Facebook, and I purposely left my political views out of my profile description.
