hair thinning after pregnancy

I know your hair can thin out a little after having a baby but is it normal for it to start thinning 4 months post-partum? The last week or so has been crazy, like a LOT is coming out. Not in clumps or anything but a lot more than normal.

Mine didn't start falling out right away. It started about 3 months pp. I don't remember how long it lasted, but my hair has never been the same.

My hair started shedding about 3 or 4 months post partum. I never got any thinning spots, but that is normal. I just lots tons of hair and was vacuuming the floor constantly to pick it up.

My hair seemed less curly for a long time, but now I think it's becoming curlier again.
I always shed a bunch about 6-12 months post-partum. And then again when each baby weaned.

I blow it straight most of the winter, but now that it's getting hot and humid I wear it 'curly' but it's still nowhere near what it used to be. I'm really sad about losing my curls. Sophia is 2 1/2 so I really need to know what you mean by long time.

This post gives me great hope.

I also noticed a ton of shedding around 3-4 months postpartum. I agree with the whole hair never being the same again. Since having my son my hair is drier, frizzier and a lot harder to manage. Now that I'm pregnant again, it's totally freaking out.

Oliver is almost 2 now. My hair seemed all 2B/2C for a long time, but now I'm getting more areas of 3A, and it's especially curly towards the roots, which makes me think it's new growth that is growing in curlier. It's mostly around my hairline in front and in the underneath layers, while a lot of the top/crown is definitely more wavy than curly. I've also started using KCCC, and I'm having good luck with that.

My hair has sucked since I had my baby too. I'm hoping if I have another baby, maybe it will magically make my hair awesome again--a girl can dream!

And yeah, I think 4 months was around when my hair started falling out.

My hair fell out with each kid somewhere between 4-6 months post partum. I had very thin spots all along my hairline, especially at the temples.

My theory is that the pregnancy hormones cause my hair to grow in straight. Then a ton of it falls out and I'm left with a thin, stringy mess. It was like this with all 3 of my pregnancies. So I basically have a 2 year ugly period while I wait for the curliness to come back and the thin spots to fill back in. Some spots where I lost a bunch of hair have come back in super curly, where the rest of my hair is still looser.

Since I've been either pregnant or breast feeding for the better part of 8 1/2 years, I'm waiting to see what my hair will finally do once my hormones go back to normal. My hair is not nearly as thick, and lacks body. It's pretty limp, and I have to use a ton of hairspray to give it texture and hold. I hope it returns to the way it was before, but who knows.
Sounds like 3-4 months is the magic number...I wonder why, I suppose the pregnancy hormones are starting to work themselves out. Apparently they take your hair with them when they leave.

My hairdresser said that she thinks it's less curly too..great, a thin sorta wavy flat mess. My hair is so fine and not that thick to begin with, no wonder it won't do anything. I was actually tempted to get some kind of pixie cut, which I never have done. I wouldn't know what cut to get with curls anyway, it just sounds so much easier.

I lost handfuls of hair when my son was about 3-4 months old. I was done breastfeeding/pumping by the time he was 2 months old. It tapered off by the time he was 6 months old. My hair went back to its normal thickness and I had no thin spots.

My hair is wonky during/after pregnancy...

with DS...
Got very curly while pregnant, then at the end of pregnancy it totally flattened out to a stringy mess, fell out a TON around 3 months ppd, then since I was flat ironing looked crazy as the entire crown grew back. I got it TR'd around 18 months ppd BUT all my regrowth was my normal 3b curls

with DD
Grew in very loose, so I had my TR'd hair, my 4 inches of 3b regrowth and then waves/stringy. Did not fall out until 4 months ppd and did not have any extra when she weaned at 7 months. BUT the crown area still grew back at a 3b, so until my TR last week I was looking rough (there is no way to flat iron those little baby hairs without them sticking straight in the air!)
Am I the only weirdo whose curls didn't change? I lost a lot of hair PP w/ DD, but it never changed its curl pattern. The hair grew back the same, too. This time, I think it's actually a little curlier PP, but it's also summer and more humid, so it's hard to tell what to attribute the curliness to.

Are you all using anything to help grow the thinning areas? I've noticed my temples have thinned alot since I had DD and I asked the girls in the 4a forum and they suggesting Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I bought some this weekend on the net. Hopefully it will be here by next weekend. Really sucks too! Not only am I dealing with heat damage from a bad blowout, now I've got bald spots!

I used Nioxxin shampoo and conditioner for a while, but I don't know if that helped or not. When I ran out of it, I didn't buy it again. For me I had to be patient and wait out for the hair to grow back in. Once I got a little bit of growth, you could hardly see the bald spots anymore.
