I think Abram was about the same size as Ava when he was born (she was 6 lb 12 oz) and I was just curious, if you don't mind sharing, how much he weighs now and what size clothing he's in? I know they're only a week apart so I was wondering if maybe they were close. Everyone acts as though Ava is soooo teensy (I've even been asked if she was a preemie) but I really don't think she's all THAT small.

She'll be 6 months old tomorrow and she weighed 14 lb 10 oz at her last appt two weeks ago, so I'm guessing she's at least 15 and 1/2 pounds now. She's about to grow out of her 3-6 months clothes although all still fit except Gerber brand stuff.

The sitter watches a boy 5 weeks older than Ava and he was 19 pounds at his 6 month checkup and I saw a baby a few days ago who's Mom kept asking how old Ava was and commenting on how tiny she was. Her baby was 7 months old exactly and weighed 23.5 pounds.

I know I'm obsessing over something silly.

I am not Pixie but Callie was 6lb 15oz when she was born...

Right now at 10 months she is 18lbs and in 12month or 18 month clothes depending. At 6 months she was around 13.5 lbs...10th percentile at our office...

Steven was 18lbs at 1 year.

Each kid is different. almost 15 lbs for a 6 month old seems perfectly healthy...she has more than doubled her birthweight.

How are her developmental skills doing??

My babies were all about the same size at birth...8 and 9 pounds...but after the first weeks, my boys were significantly larger babies than my daughter was. They were HUGE. She was tiny. All the boys were 20 pounds at 4 months, and 30 pounds at a year. She was only 12 pounds at 4 months, 16 pounds at a year. Half the size.

They were all normal.

Babies come in all sizes. It's only a problem if their growth curve isn't consistant for them, not how they compare to other babies.

I'm sure Ava is fine.

Just have to chime in here with my small kid- she is 2 and weighs 19 lbs. She is perfectly healthly, although this summer I am going to see if I can get a little weight on her (as soon as I figure out how).

Ava doesn't seem that small... she is just right!

Thanks RCW and deezee. I know you're right. I'm really not all that concerned because she's stayed in the same growth curve and her doctor says she's perfect, but I get tired of the "oh my GOD, she's so tiny" comments from people.

Good. She's been sitting with support for several weeks, rolling each direction, pushing up with her elbows straight, creeping, I guess (she pushes up on her hands, sticks her butt in the air, and tries to scoot forward until she gets frustrated and screams. She "talks" nonstop, smiles, laughs, all that good stuff. I have no reason to worry really, but then I have people making me feel as though she's sickly or something. I was the same size as her at her age and I'm far from being a small person, so I don't think that makes any difference really.

I have noticed people will constantly make you feel bad about your kid if you listen.

Last weekend someone told me I should be worried b/c her 9 month old was taller than Callie and her baby was only in the 50th percentile...yeah I am 5'4, not going to have a basketball team on my hands.

With Steven's problems I got pretty used to not worring about what other people think, I guess it is one of the advantages of having a kid who is so far behind everyone right from the start.

As long as she is developmentally good, and on her own curve, I would not be worried.

I wouldn't worry at all. Abram was 6lb 14oz at birth, but he was also 3 weeks early. We have his 6-month checkup next week, but at his 4-month checkup he was 14b 4oz... which is exactly what Sol was at his 6-month. Abram's been wearing 6-9months, 6-12months, or 9months (depending on the brand) since he was about 4 months old or so. Everyone says Abram's a big boy, but he was actually only in around the 40th percentile at his 4-month so definitely no bigger than "average". I think because people compare him to Sol and also because I'm small, he looks big when I hold him.

Anyway, I wouldn't compare Ava to Abram because every baby's different especially girls and boys. I definitely wouldn't worry if I were you, especially since she's staying on her growth curve. Sol's always been tiny, and he did fall of his curve by 1 year (even using the much-more-accurate WHO charts), but our doctor is amazing and recognized that everything else about him was fine and he's happy and healthy. He's about 24lb now at 32 months. He can wear anywhere from 12months to 2T in tops (needs bigger size for length in long sleeve shirts), and 9months to 2T in bottoms (he needs a 2T for length in pants, but then he definitely needs a belt or adjustable waist... he and Abram are sharing 9months shorts this summer... though Sol does have a pair that's 12 or 18 months that he wears but are a bit loose in the waist).

Seriously, though, don't get worked up over it. Sol was my first obviously and it was hard not to worry, but you know your baby best and you know that she's happy and healthy (especially since you figured out the reflux/dairy stuff).

I think it's just something people say offhand, without a thought. If if bothers you, just say, "Yeah, I know. She's my petite princess" and keep the conversation moving elsewhere.

Lilly had her 2 year check-up this morning and she is 23 lbs and 33" tall. She was 22 lbs. and 32" at her 18 month check-up. This totally follows her growth pattern for her life.

She is actually napping in a 6 month Carters onsie right now. I have really gotten my money's worth wih her clothes.

FieryCurls, that cracks me up: Aidan is also 33" tall, but he weighs 30 lb.

My kids have all been different: Max was off the charts big (weight and height) and still is (at 9 years old, he is nearly 5 ft tall and 99 lb.). Maya was tiny as a baby but is now on the smaller end of average. Aidan has always been pretty average (although he was a skinny newborn and I got a lot of comments about that. My mother went so far as to accuse me of drinking throughout my pregnancy ). They've all always been healthy.

Ivy was born at 8lb 7oz and it took her a year to double her birthweight. She stayed small for years. Now at 9 1/2 she's taller than most of her friends, still thin, but healthy. I totally stressed about it when she was a toddler but it wasn't worth the stress. Plus you get more wear out of her clothes like fiery said.

DS was actually the smaller one, doctors even worried, but at 7 he's the same size as the rest of his friends.

This is true for S also...even being on the "smaller side of average" he is the same size as the kids that will be in his class.

Yup. As you may know my petite princess is 20 lbs at age 2.5. She always catches peoples eye because her developmental stage doesn't match her appearance (and of course she's really cute!). Usually when someone asks her age, I'll anticipate their response and say "She's 2.5..... she's our tiny princess".

ETA - just wanted to add that (as I'm sure you know) you need to be confident in yourself and your child! If you are insecure then you will hear judgement in people's comments that is probably not really there. People just like to talk about babies and there isn't much to say about a 6 month old except commenting on their size. Both of mine have been small (my first was 15 lbs at 7 months just like Ava) and I get comments from strangers daily regarding DD but I don't think any of them have been malicious. In fact, people have gone out of their way to be reassuring, telling me about their niece/nephew who was also small but now plays football etc....

Yes, and, if people can tell you are unsure of yourself, they will feel more welcome to criticize and/or offer unsolicited advice.

This.

Babies are cute/big/small...and that's about it. What else can you say about them? Mostly people just like to look at and admire babies, and they often chat nonsense while doing so. Don't take it all so personally.

I have a tiny baby too. I don't remember how big Sophia was at 6 months, but it was small. She was 22 lbs at her 2.5 year check up, which puts her in the less than 5th percentile for weight. She wears 12 month shorts and skirts, 18 month shirts and dresses. Pants are a much bigger problem because anything that fits her waist is way to short.

I think it's cute that she's so tiny, so when people comment on it, it doesn't bother me at all. I mean it's true, she IS tiny.

My doctor was worried for a while when she slipped from the 10th percentile to the less than 5th, but she's been going steady on that curve for over a year so they don't seem to be concerned anymore.

I think it's cute, too. I have a friend with a 30-somethng lb. 17 month old and she is always wanting me to hold and carry her, but I can't do it for too long since she's heavy. I never have that problem with Lilly. I could carry all day if I wanted to.

That's true, although I also hear "she has a temper" and "she's going to be a handful in a couple years isn't she?" both of which are likely true.

I shouldn't take it personally, you're right. I know that healthy babies and kids (and adults too, for that matter!) come in all shapes and sizes. I still believe some people say it almost maliciously, like I'm starving her or something, although that is clearly not true. I will keep some of the things you guys said in mind when someone comments on it. I like the idea of saying "yep, she's my petite princess," etc. Or I could just say "yeah, she gets that from me" and watch people look confused and awkward, since I'm 5'5-5'6 and on the larger side.
