Tummy Flu.... update 7/6/2010

my lovely son has had diarrhea for since last Tuesday and has vomited a few times...

we took him to the doctor on Saturday and the doctor said that as long as he is not running a fever or lethargic that he can resume normal activities.

He gave me a list of foods to avoid (Milk esp!!) and told me to give him gatorade, white grape juice, ginger ale

Here is where it gets guilty... at least for me
our in-laws were here over the 4th weekend and took Liam back to So. Va for the week (an already planned trip) the Doctor said that it was fine for him to go..

I feel so guilty... I just want him to get better.. I guess he can get better there as well as here.

I should have kept him at home!

** UPDATE ** 6:30am this morning the nana calls they are taking him to the hospital.. he ate okay last night but threw up several times last night with diarrhea as well... he won't drink anything... I am so scared he's freaking 5 hours away I am sitting on pins and needles waiting for them to call back

why did I let him go? I feel horrible now

has anyone's kid gone thru this? what will they do at the hospital?

As long as he's eating/drinking and not feverish, I think it's fine to send him with his grandparents. Grandmas (and grandpas) can handle a little diarrhea.
((((HUGS)))) deedles!!! Don't beat yourself up about letting him go - the doctor said it was okay. Also, your in-laws may just be being extra-cautious because it's their precious grandson (I don't mean that with sarcasm) so it may not necessarily be that he needs to be at the hospital, just that they don't want to take any chances.

I don't know what they'll do at the hospital, but my guess is that they will give him IV fluids to prevent dehydatrion.

Keep us posted!

Thanks PC. I will keep everyone posted

she called and said they were at the ER and that were waiting for the doctor.. they tried to take his temp with a oral thermometer but he gagged and couldn't hold it in his mouth.. they took it with a ear one and he wasn't running a fever... THANK GOD!

I think the biggest thing is the distance I am away from him...

I would feel the same way. Your not alone. Hang in there. Give us an update when you have one.
update... 2:30pm

I just heard from hubby who got a call from his Mom who stated that he is doing better but they want to keep him overnight for observation.

I wanna go down so bad but I guess the doctor's are saying not too cause if its viral we can get it easily (esp. Colin)

I'll keep you posted when I hear from them again

Try not to feel bad. This could be a blessing in disguise. You and the baby probably wont get it and you don't have to try and take care of a very sick toddler and a baby.

I know he's your baby and I know he wants you and it breaks your heart but he'll be fine. He'll probably not even remember much of it. Keep us updated.

I can't understand why you're not in your car and on your way. There is no way I would let someone else take my daughter while she was sick, and if she was scared in a hospital I would be there ASAP. I can't understand why you don't go and let your husband stay home with your younger son.

You "guess" the doctor said not to, MIL said not to, these people are not in charge. This is your son, I can't understand why you wouldn't go. Your instincts are telling you to go.

I hope you get some good news soon and that he's doing better.

Just want to add the milk thing is a myth.
Did the folks know about everything?
What did hubby say?

and in regards with him being contagious, he was probably contagious all last week and you all were already exposed.

I know that sounds harsh, but I am kind of surprised that so many people are telling you, "It's okay..." and all of that, yet you ignored your gut instinct of keeping him home with you.
If he was sick since last week, you have all ready all been exposed to whatever he has...so the excuse of it being contagious doesn't fly with me. The stomach flu can also be contagious even after the symptoms have cleared up, there is still a chance that the virus is in the stool.

Anyways, I hope you get some good news soon. I'd be in the car and on the way either with the rest of my family or without to get to him.
Update 7/7/2010 7:15pm

Well we are now in Danville, VA (home of in-laws) Liam was admitted into hospital yesterday afternoon and was discharged this evening after a whole round of tests and IV fluids.

We left yesterday at 4:30pm from DC and arrived in Danville at close to midnight... hubby stayed with Liam overnight since I had the baby to also care for.. today we went in turns to be with him.

He is doing so much better... the Doctor's stated that the most important thing now is to keep him hydrated and that the eating is not so important as keeping the fluids going.

We will follow up with his pediatrician when we get back to DC (Saturday)

Hope he continues to feel better! It's so scary when they're that small and sick.
I am glad they were able to give him fluids, dehydration is scary when they are little.

Hope he feels better soon.
I'm so glad he was well enough to be discharged, and that you and DH are there with him. I'll continue to keep him in my thoughts!

Oh Deedle, I'm glad you decided to go. I would probably be in my car immediately as well. I'm so glad to hear Liam is doing better. Hopefully the little one won't get it...breastfeeding will probably minimize the affect if he does.

Chas' had a bad round of stomach flu when Addison was very little ..she only ended up with a little bit of diarrhea.

Thinking of you guys.
