Chicken Pox

Okay, who all's kiddos have had Chicken Pox? I think Chas' has it.

I thought it started with fever...then the pox show up? Chas has spots all over him...no fever yet? It's definitely does not look like an allergy reaction. It's spreading to his arms since this morning. No itching yet. I see little blisters. I have a call into the doctor's office.

Addison is running fever.
Update. We are 99% sure we have chicken pox. He is in the early stages...a few have little blisters. The nurse wants us to call back in tomorrow morning to see if we've reached a full stage...blistered and scabbed. Chas doesn't have any fever...maybe that will come. He states he's not itchy (not sure when that starts).. I guess 24 hours will tell.

Addison is running fever but I've seen no spots yet which makes me wonder if Chas ran a low-grade and I didn't know it? Anyway, the Nanny's daughter who has had the chicken pox shot...has 5 spots on her as well. I'll be curious if she ends up with chicken pox after having the shot.

So any advice to you mother's who have gone through this?
Advice: Try to prevent scars. It's not the scratching that creates scars, but rather bacteria that gets into the scabs and eats the skin's collegen. Apply Bacitracin (or any triple antibiotic cream) to all his pock scabs several times a day, until the scab is cleared...they'll be red and flat.

Aveeno Oatmeal baths soothe itchy/pocky skin. Let him soak as long as he wants to.
Can I get that over the counter or do I need a prescription? Just put it on the one's that are scabbed or all of them?\

I may have some Oatmeal stuff. They stated baking soda too will help? I also have some Aveno itching cream?

If you can get them in a pool, the chlorine will help with the itch and the scabs will clear quicker.

hmmm...I have might have access but that will depend on if my SIL and BIL have had chicken pox. Otherwise, I just have a blow-up pool...which cool water will help. Thanks for that info CurlyCanadian.
Aloe vera gel and juice help a lot. I had a very bad case of the pox but no itching. My parents think it was because of the aloe.

Each individual pox will usually erupt, pop, and scab within 8 hours, and they usually erupt in groups for about 24 hours, so by tomorrow or so, he'll probably be all scabbed over. It's the scabs you need to keep antibiotic cream on. Once he is fully scabbed, he's no longer contagious.

The scabs can last UP TO A MONTH, so to prevent scarring, you really need to keep on top of applying antibiotic cream. If he's got particular scabs he keeps scratching at, you can put bandaids over them. Scars last a lifetime. I have many CP scars on my face, and I had CP as an infant almost 50 years ago. I wish someone had prevented them, because they can't be fixed.
I'm dumb. What is OTC?

He's started to scab..they are really small..all his pox are. I remember mine being bigger but I was 3 years older than him...maybe that's why. I do see a few new ones. He doesn't seem to be itching...which is really strange to me.

Addison has about 5 pox...but she is running a really high fever still. 104 yesterday evening...it was early this morning that she woke up with it spiked again so I gave her more Advil but didn't check it so I wouldn't wake her up more. How long does the fever last? 24 hours...48 hours? 104 scares me...anything higher than that scares me more. Advil seems to bring it down to where she is happy with a low grade but it seems to not last as long as the motrin. We start spiking about 30 minutes before the minimum 6 hour time slot.
what about alternating tylonal and motrin (I believe you can give every 4 hours then--but double check)

OTC=over the counter

Come swag with me!
I hope the kiddos feel better soon.
Well I guess my mom instincts are shot. It is not chicken pox..they didn't materialize normally yesterday so I took them to the doctor. It is a virus. Apparently Addison is getting the brunt of it and Chas just got away with the breakout.

Addison's fever is gone but her mouth is full of sores. Any idea on how to help these? The doctor suggested Maalox or Mylanta swab her mouth with those to coat. Other than that Motrin (which I'm doing) and cold food. She doesn't want to eat..maybe a few bites. Problem is her paci will fall to one side and hit the sore while she's sleeping so she wakes up screaming. Any other suggestions? I'm hoping these will be much better by tomorrow but I think I'm in for a long night.

Thanks for all the suggestions and support. I would alternate Motrin and Tylenol...but you can't buy tylenol these days. So all I have is Children's Advil which I don't think works as good as Motrin does.
Is it hand, foot, and mouth disease? How old is Addison now? Alexander had HFM last summer. His doctor called in Magic Mouthwash. He was swish as best he could. Immediately after, he could manage to eat some. Even if Addison wouldn't swish, you could swab. That won't help overnight but it will help her eat a little.

I think you can still by generic Tylenol.

Nice work, DA...
Hope the little ones get to feeling better soon, IC...
I wonder if this is what Sandhya has? She had a fever for 2 days, and since yesterday has been crying hysterically and refusing to eat anything. And she is drooling all over the place! But I don't see any sores.

DS mentioned just last week that HFM is making its rounds of our area.

I hope your little ones are getting better, IC.

Well this was the weekend from ..... Addison kept us up all Friday night just crying...she would fall asleep for about 20 minutes then wake up screaming because of her mouth.
I took her back to the doctor but the only other helpful thing was giving her a tsp of Benedryl to help her sleep and do the tylenol instead of motrin because I could give it more often. She refused to eat all weekend pretty much until this morning but the Benedryl did seem to knock her out at night...so that she could sleep. I would sneak in tylenol during the night and she would swallow and roll over.

Mad Scientist how is Sandyha doing? We didn't have the mouth issue until the fever broke. I didn't notice the spots until the doctor showed me. Addison didn't have a rash all over...I think it was mainly in her mouth. Chas' was all over...mainly his chest and back...down to top of his bottom.

Doctor did say this was a summer virus that makes it's rounds during the heat.
