Aw, thanks ladies. I'm feeling great. Not much in the way of symptoms just yet. I have my first midwife appt next Friday.

Haven't decided when to tell the parents yet. Christmas day is tempting, but I'll be just shy of 8 weeks... so not sure. DH and I were going to wait until we had our first US, but that won't be for several more weeks. Any insights on that?

Traditionally most people wait until 12 week because the risk of miscarriage is lower at that point. Now many docs do an ultrasound about 8 weeks, to confirm fetus and date the pregnancy.

Yeah, 12 weeks is what we were thinking. It's just tempting to put a surprise under the Xmas tree for the in-laws since we'll be there for christmas day. I think we'll probably end up waiting though.

12 weeks is a long time to keep a secret. I was always showing by then, so I never waited that long. I would probably tell everyone at xmas. I don't think miscarriage is something I would want to keep secret, so I don't see the point of waiting until 12 weeks to tell people I care about.

I told close friends and family right away. I told work at about 8 weeks or so. Maybe earlier. I forget. Other than agreeing to play with Wile a few weeks back on nc.com I haven't really announced anything formally. Certainly no "I'm pregnant" on facebook/twitter.

As for confirming for myself - I don't do ultrasounds unless it is absolutely necessary and/or recommended by my midwife. I just did the doppler thingy to hear the heartbeat last week and I'm about 14 weeks. I'm not in a rush to "confirm" anything. I know what's going down in that area and it certainly isn't a beer gut.

If I run into people I know, I'll say something, mostly because started showing really early, I hear that's common the more babies you have. This is #3 for me. I think it depends on how comfortable you feel. There are no hard/fast rules for telling/not telling.

Congrats!

Just saw this, congratulations, hope all goes well. I waited until 12 weeks to tell anyone but I think Christmas would be a lovely time for you to tell.

I'm really leaning towards xmas... 12 weeks is a really long time and made even longer by the number of parties and whatnot this time of year that I have to make excuses about not drinking/being tired/etc! DH is coming with me to my first appt on friday, so maybe after that I'll talk him into going shopping with me to get this book we saw before we even started trying. We both saw it and said, "We'll have to get that for our parents when we make them grandparents!" It won't take much talking into, he's ready to tell.

Sorry I'm late to the game--I just now realized that this thread had taken a completely different direction! CONGRATULATIONS!

We told our parents at 10 week (my OB does an US at the first visit, to confirm the pregnancy, which was at 9 weeks, and we wanted to have an US picture to show them). I told 2 close friends, and my husband told people at his work. As for the rest of the world, we didn't tell until this week, which is 14 weeks, just because my husband can't hold it in any longer. If it were up to me, I would just let people figure it out in June when a baby shows up, ha ha. But I'm sure I'll start showing soon, so I guess it's a good idea.

ANYWAY--I think Christmas is a great idea. It'll be a great gift for your families! :-D Congrats again!

Congrats!!

As for when to tell. One way I see it is that if I were to miscarry I would want the support from my family, so we told my parents right away & my in-laws soon after. We asked them all to not share the news until we were further along, or we chose to make it public.

It sounds like it could be a nice Christmas present for them.

Thanks, Spider, nd and goldy! I appreciate the good wishes.

All of the parents/immediate family members know now. Whew! I was nervous about all of the reactions, but it went well and all are pretty excited. It'll be the first grandchild on both sides.
