Default Nursing strike?

My son is almost 5.5 months old. Over the last week he has refused to nurse during the day. Everytime i try to nurse him, he cries/screams and arches his back. Or he'll bite down and unlatch and laugh/smile. He only nurses overnight and early in the morning without a fuss.

Since he was 2 wks old, he has been getting formula 1 or 2x a day in a bottle and the rest of the feedings have been on the breast (4 or 5 a day).

I think there are a couple of reasons why all of a sudden he has lost interest.
1. I introduced rice cereal 2 weeks ago but just 1 or 2 tablespoons a day
2. I just got my period for the first time 4 days ago.

My question is - how to deal with it? I'm not ready to wean him now. I'd still like to give him breast at least 3x a day.

How often should i pump to keep my supply up? Is this strike temporary? How can you get a baby to want to nurse again?

I wanted to make it to 6 mths where he would nurse 4 times. I'm sad he does not want to anymore.

I would appreciate any advice you have. Thanks.

Is it possible he's teething? If his gums are hurting, he's probably less interesting in nursing.

I'd skip the formula and cereal for a day or two and just offer the breast. He'll come back to it.

Pardon my ignorance, but how/why does getting your period affect a baby wanting to nurse?

Blame it on the cell phone...

Some say the hormone change probably affects the taste of the milk and some babies are temporarily put off by it. My babies never seemed to notice, but maybe others do.

Maybe he's just being 'lazy'. Formula keeps them full longer, and comes pretty easily out of the bottle. And cereal is thick and being fed to him. And that definitely keeps him full longer. But breastfeeding requires a little more work on their part.

Kind of like, would you rather make your own salad or have somebody hand you a cheeseburger. (Loose analogy.)

He is also teething so I guess it's a combo of a bunch of things.

Thanks ladies. I will try removing cereal/formula for a couple days and see how it goes.
