Induce labor: share your thoughts

Like Tree9Likes

My younger sister is expecting her first child. she is 40 weeks. She was due 4 days ago. tomorrow she is scheduled to be induced.my mother whose had 10 kids ( 9 with a midwife at home natural birth no epidural no c section so she's a tough cookie) argues that this is wrong. she said it is normal for her to be late because it is her first child and I agree. we both feel putting chemicals in the body goes against nature and may increase the chances of having complications.
People in third world countries have natural birth successfully everyday.

Can anyone relate to this situation?please share your personal experiences/thoughts.

My mom was one week late with me and drs. choosed to induce her. During the first hours everything went fine, but then i got a heart attack and it stopped beating - mom had to have an emergency cesarian (is this the right word? they had to cut me out) in order for me to get reanimated .... Afterwards the drs. told her that the complication may be linked with induction.
My two little siblings were both late in arrival, but this time she refused put any chemicals into her body again - and though being late, both of them were born healthy

As far as I understand, late is after 42 weeks.

I was past 40 weeks with both my pregnancies and did not get induced. With my first pregnancy, which almost went to 42 weeks, they did weekly biophysical profiles after my due date to make sure the baby and fluid levels were fine. I wouldn't want to induce labor unless there was a medical reason.
I was induced and still had to have a c section. My son is 4 now and healthy. I wouldn't bother your sister bc she has made her decision and she doesn't need to hear horror stories that will stress her out or make her feel guilty.

Childbirth complications is the leading cause of death for women and children in those countries as well. Be glad your sister will be in good hands. This time tomorrow none of this will matter and you'll be a proud antie! Congrats!! :-) I don't know your sister of course but I just said a prayer for her and baby.
My sister decided to not get induced andd wait! She did extensive research and she wants to give her baby a chance to come the natural way. She also said she wants the experience of her water breaking. I'm very excited that she changed her mind. Birthing should be a natural thing not forced. She isnt even 41weeks! Whats the rush?

Thank you to everybody who posted on here Especially those that supported my decision Your stories really confirmed that what I was talking about was right.

@ mcheryce you had to be induced and had a C section that is my sisters greatest fear. horror stories are there too prevent mistakes from being repeated. She need to hear them so she can make the best decision for her and her baby.
Like i said in the post my mom had 9 children natural at home in a third world country and she wouldn't have it any other way. My baby sister was born in the U.S and they wanted to hook her up to machines the minute the nurses walked out she pushed that baby on her own. She is no joke.

People like to focus on the negative and instill fear in women hearts while they are the most vulnerable. Doctors know pregnant women will do whats best for her baby .Your statement about deaths may be high in third world country because they lack proper healthcare but whats our excuse? We are top in medical advancement and still c section is the most common over natural birth. There is something shaddy about this. Just saying.

I know but I was later told I would have died bc the way that he was positioned he couldn't get out. I went into labor on a Tuesday and didn't have him till Saturday! Don't wanna scare you but a c section saved our lives. :-)

My younger sis doc says she could be contracting for up to 3 days before dilating ...thats. 3 days of pain and epidurals aren't offered until like 5 cm dilate. Thats torture

Yeah tell me about it! Plz keep us posted. Late is not until 42 weeks so she's got plenty of time.
For the record the induction wasnt the problem for me. It was the baby's position. Anyway keep us posted.

In sacramento theres a pizza parlor that claims to have a special pizza that induces labor. :-) Tell her "happy pushing!"

Did the dr do a membrane sweep? I hear that's been successful for some. But I agree she's not late until after 42 weeks.

It REALLY is up to her, so if she wants to be induced, you have to just be there to support her. Nothing's worse than being harassed/guilted/etc when you're already vulnerable.

Thaaat being said, I agree with you. I'd personally avoid induction at all costs. There are loads of things you can try if she wants to help to start labor along (walking, LOTS of walking, rocking on an exercise ball, etc.), but the baby will come when he/she is ready!
I think your sister made a wise decision to educate herself. She should continue to read more, about pregnancy, labor & delivery. She deserves to be informed when making decisions.
Ah, it all makes sense now. Goldy is the puppet master!
