I got a ton of recieving blankets for my shower, and it turned out my son hated to be swaddled in any way. Having some blankets whether your baby likes to be swaddled or not is helpful though, so I would say maybe having 5 of them on hand should do you well, until you see if your baby likes to be swaddled or if you have a need for more. I wouldn't buy any myself at this point though, more than likely people will give them to you as a gift. If you find you don't recieve enough they are easy enough to find and cheap enough not to break a budget.

Audrey was able to get out of any swaddle, so we used the miracle blanket, which was impossible for her to get out of until she was about 3 or 4 months old. We had two and that was enough. I did do laundry fairly frequently, though. But I don't recall the blankets getting dirty often.

I second the gap blankets!!! They were the best to swaddle...especially a bigger baby. The small receiving blankets that come in packets were not very useful to me except to roll up and use in the carseat to keep Chas' head from going side to side. He prefered his arms out...but the rest of him swaddled.

We also were given some of the receiving blankets that the hospital used...these were nice and big too. Worked great for swaddling. We then layed a heavier blanket over Chas after he was swaddled during the colder months.

Now we just layer his clothes and he has one silky light weight blanket because he moves a ton in bed.
