Default Help me name my new baby girl!

Fiance and I cannot decide on a name!
We had a boy's name, but found out yesterday it's a girl!
We sort of agree on the name Elliot for a girl, call her Ellie for short. It's a cute nickname and a good strong name suitable for Harvard. (Am I a little ahead of myself or what? )
Yet it's still traditional, sort of.
She'll probably have my man's red hair, so that has to be considered.
And by far the biggest problem is it has to go with the last name McMillin without sounding like a cartoon character.
We considered Amelia and Camille, but put them with the last name and you'll see why we gave up. It's a tongue twister!
If we do choose Elliot, we still need a middle name, something short and sweet and feminine.
Any suggestions?

I hardly ever post on these sorts of threads, and, while I adore the name Elliott (if we have a second child who turns out to be a boy, it's one I'd consider), I have to say that I don't think it goes rhythmically very well with your last name. Same goes for both other names you mentioned, though I love both Amelia and Camille and think they're fabulous on their own. Here's my rationale: the heavy emphasis of the L sound in the middle of all 3 of those first names, combined with the equally heavy emphasis of the L sound in the middle of your last name, feels like it's too much of that single syllable, alliterative in a way that's awkward for me. I hope that doesn't sound harsh. I don't mean to be.

Obviously this is my two cents; I'm sure I'm influenced right this second by the poetry thesis I'm reviewing. I'm hyper-aware of all things linguistic at the moment, particularly how words sound together and whether they have a pleasing rhythm.

ETA: Based on the lovely, classic name choices you're considering, you might want to spend some time over at the Bad Baby Names forum. There are a lot of folks over there who seem to like those sorts of classic un-trendy names, and the boards there could provide some interesting ideas and inspiration (not to mention a few laughs!).

I definitely see what SP is saying about the alliteration if you choose Elliot, but I don't think it's too bad. I like Elliot and Ellie both.

For middle names, my first instinct would be something very feminine because Elliot is often thought of as a boy's name. I also like the idea of a one-syllable middle name with the 3-syllable first name. My first thought was Elliot Rose. Another good one could be Elliot Katherine (but that obviously is not one-syllable).

I think Ellie sounds really cute with your last name. If I chose a name like Ellie, I'd probably pick a middle name I can say with it on a regular basis because Ellie is a fun name like that - so Ellie Lyn, Ellie Lou, Ellie Sue...that kind of thing.

I like Elliot/Ellie with your last name. Amelia and Camille not so much, but I think with Elliot the alliteration works.

LOVE the name Elliot! I think that it goes fine with your last name. I'm no help on the middle name, though.

Have you thought about Eleanor or Eliza to get the nickname Ellie? I think they both sound gorgeous with your last name.

Sweetpickles, that's exactly why we're hesitating. Besides the fact that my mom hates it and said it's awful.
She wants me name the baby something ultra-fem, like Gabriella or Brianna. Those are fine, but I've never given birth to an ultra-fem girl.
I just don't want to saddle my child with a big honker of a name. McMillin is hard to match!!!!!

Hee, "big honker." That's exactly why I thought you might err on the side of something less alliterative, something that didn't contain the same consonant sound (I'm glad I didn't offend you with my opinion!). I love velvetpaws's suggestion of Eliza (that is my top choice if we were to have another girl child in fact, nevermind the Buffy reference). If you coupled that with a shorter middle name, I think it would sound lovely with your last name, and you'd get Ellie too. I'm all about how the whole package sounds.

I thought of Elliot Rose too! Elliot is the name of a female character on Scrubs so for me, it's not too strange as a girl's name.

And I like alliterative names.

Elliot Bella McMillian
Elliot Swan McMillian
Elliot Eden McMillian
Elliot Ava McMillian

Just a few thoughts. I know Eden isnt very girly, but I love the name. I dont know how religous you are, or if that even matters. Or you could use Eden as a first name.

Eden Rose McMillian-which would be really cute because her name would mean rose of paradise, or paradise rose.

Eden Bella McMillian- which would mean paradise beauty, or beauty of paradise.

Eden Swan McMillian-which would mean swan like, so if you like swans or think they are graceful...

All very cute combos....what about Elyse or Elise McMillian. I was just talking with my boyfriend over dinner about this thread and he said he wants to name his first son Chino. I hope he was kidding. You should've seen my face...I shot that down immediately and said he could name our 1st dog Chino instead. Aren't Chino's pants?! Anyway, I'm a huge fan of the name Ava, Ariel, and sometimes Kayla.

I'm going to add a plug for Elise too...it's classic, not overused, and oh yeah, it's my daughter's name. :P
