Default Gag Reflex

When your little one was learning to eat big people food did they throw up a lot? Chas has thrown up the first time he eats anything new. For instance, I steamed potatoes last night and cut them up in small pieces. He liked them and ate them along with green beans. Close to the end of dinner he started to cough and then make gagging noises. I was about to get wrench him out of his chair when he threw up and then coughed and threw up pretty much his whole dinner.

He did this the first time he had green beans and the first time he had cantaloupe. Thoughts?

I know little ones have great gagging reflexes but am I doing something wrong???

Some kids just puke easier than others. Try cutting his food up really small, or going back to pureed foods for a month or so and then re-starting him on chunky pieces.

Steven everytime we introducs a new texture. Usually one Gag and i pull the food away and give him something he is used to. I figure this is a slow process and he will eventually get used to it.

I never let S have more than a little bit of any new thing - really, it just saved on clean up. I think with S, she just does not hesitate to puke if she is even a little bit uncomfortable or unsure. She'll just gag it right up and she's always been like that. It SUCKS!

Not to scare you, but my 6 year old is still like that. Happened just a few months ago with a peach. In a restaurant. It was in the Jello. Not even a big bite. Entire meal back on the table. I felt so bad for the wait staff, and we apologized to the owner even. I made my husband leave a big tip.

Sorry for the slow response, yesterday was a crazy day. Chas has a URI so I've been home with him. The coughing is probably causing him to barf but I really think he's doing it because of the new textures. I'll just slowly transition him over.

I'm just glad it's not just my kid.

Emma gets like this sometimes. She's a very good eater, but there are sometimes that she gags on one thing, and right out it comes.

My girl had/has a VERY strong gag reflex, always has. She would also have a problem with my let-down during nursing, it came out just TOO fast for her. My son wasn't like that, and didn't ahve that strong of a gag reflex.

Bailey had a strong gag reflux, but she never threw anything up. Other than a couple of times when she was sleeping, and phlegmmy from a cold. But from gagging on food, I don't recall her vomiting.

I always assumed her gag reflux was b/c she had meconium when she was born, so they had to stick a tube down her throat to suck it out.
