I think she has pink eye...

Jocelyn (who is now 2) has been suffering from a cold for several days now and this morning she woke up with a slightly red eye. I thought it might have just been cold related because it seemed to get a little better once she was up, but today when I picked her up from my mom's it was more red.

She scratches at it occasionally, but it is all bloodshot, especially under the bottom lid. So, first thing in the morning I'll be calling the doctor.

Any recs on what to do? I read that pink eye could either be viral or bacterial, but beyond that I don't know what to do for it.
You could try putting a cool washcloth over her irritated eye. My advice is, if you go to the Dr. and it is pinkeye, get the drops for yourself too. And wash your hands constantly. Pinkeye is super contagious.

Nearly all pinkeyes are viral, especially if she also has a respiratory virus going on. The doctor will probably give you antibiotic drops anyway though. They always do.
is it matted shut in the morning with discharge?

and as RCW said, it's probably viral if she's got an URI.. she shouldn't need antibiotic drops..

help her wash her hands frequently and try your best to encourage her to not rub her eyes..
Ah, it all makes sense now. Goldy is the puppet master!

I used a warm wash cloth to clean it up and she's not poking at it too much, which is good. We are super diligent with washing our hands (this is one of her favorite things to do anyway, then she walks around making everyone smell her nice, soap-scented hands - what a trip!), so we'll most certainly continue.

I should have asked the nurse when I talked to her on the phone - what is the length of the contagious period with pink eye? If we start treating it is she safe to go back to daycare tomorrow (my aunt's house - but my 7 year old cousin is there in the mornings until she goes to school). I don't want her to pass it along (if she hasn't already).

I actually had pinkeye myself about a month earlier, and no one else in the house ended up getting it, so caution works!
