This is a spinoff from the "If you knew then" thread." What size clothes would you all recommend starting off with? Big babies (8-10 lbs) run in both sides of our family, and although I know that's no guarantee, I really don't want to get a bunch of clothes that will only last a week.

We're not finding out the sex, so I want to just start off with some basics like onesies and sleep 'n plays, and then get more after the baby's born.

Honestly, I would get a few of newborn and 0-3 things and only wash a few pieces of each so that you have something in each size to bring the baby home in but don't waste a of clothes if the baby doesn't fit the smaller sizes. Then once the baby is here, wash everything and pick up some more things that you know for sure will fit.

My son was on track to be a larger baby but then he came early and I didn't have any preemie or newborn sizes. Everyone had to scramble to get him a few things that didn't fall right off of him. I kicked myself several times about that even though it wasn't my fault.

I never used newborn sizes and he was just over 7 lbs - I think for most babies born in the appropriate time frame the 0-3 month size would be fine. If the baby comes early or is tiny, you could always ask someone to get you a couple of preemie or newborn outfits. Honestly, I wouldn't buy too much clothing because you will probably get a ton of gifts and hand-me-downs - I have more than my son could ever wear without me adding to it by buying more! If for some reason your friends and family don't come through, then you could buy some (it's a pain to shop with a newborn sometimes so then you could order on-line or send someone.) They really only need sleepers and onesies in the first few days anyway.

We had some newborn sizes, but Harry was 8 lb, 13 oz, so he only wore them a few times. 0-3 is a good bet. You could get one package of newborn onesies, just in case. They grow out of things so fast! We're already in the 9-12 month range.

DS was 8 pounds 9 ounces when he was born (50th percentile apparently) and stayed in the 0-3 month & 3 month stuff for a while. He's not a big guy and as posted in a previous thread - has been a slow weight gainer.

He's 16 months now and wears 12 month clothes and often needs a belt with his pants.

I think 0-3 are fine.

Looking back, the most useful things were footed pajamas with zippers instead of snaps, and kimono type tops - not onesies. I changed him so often that my index finger and thumb started to feel sore from snapping and unsapping all the time. Zippers are definitely easier and kimono tops paired with diapers + babylegs would have done well for me.

Hmmm...I never thought of that. I always heard onesies were good for easy access, but I can understand fingers getting sore. Were you able to leave the babylegs on during diaper changes?

Yup. The baby legs were great. The only exception was when he got older and liked to flail around when I took his diaper off after a big bowel movement. I've learned that distracting him with a toy or something to hold keeps him from spreading his poo all over the place.

I do like onesies and other one-piece outfits for small babies because when you hold them (or especially when you wear them), a regular shirt tends to ride up a lot. If I put a regular shirt on Sol, I put a onesie on underneath.

BIG YES to the kimono type tops - they are SOOOOOOOO much easier to get over their heads too. They even make kimono type onesies.

My daughter is pretty big and she just grew out of 0-3 months at about 3 months. The newborn stuff fit her at first, but the 0-3 is a better bet.

Chas was 8lbs 7 ounces and we had one newborn outfit just in case he was smaller than planned. I returned it...he wore 0-3 months from the beginning.

There's just no way to know. My boys were big babies, so newborn sizes(diapers and clothes) were a total waste of time. But Paloma was very tiny. Even at 18 months she wasn't into 18 month sizes. She's turning 6 next month and is just now starting to grow out of 4T sizes. All I can say is to buy some newborn and 0-3 months clothing, but keep the tags on and return the newborn stuff if it turns out you don't need it.

I wish I would have bought a smaller size for his take home outfit. It was newborn 0-3 months, and despite him being average size, 7 lb 8 oz and 21 inches, it swallowed him. The pants came up to his armpits and then some, the little sweater came down to his knees. It looked ridiculous. We ended up taking the picture in just his onsie which was still a bit baggy here's the pic

newborn size worked for us for a very long time. through the 1st 3 months. she was average size (7lbs 3 oz. 21 inches) and even her newborn clothes swallowerd her up. shes 7 months old now and wears 6 month clothes.
not sure when youre due, but my summer baby rarely wore anything other than onesies/short sleeved bodysuits.

I had mostly 0-3 month clothes. I bought a newborn size outfit to take him home in, but he didn't fit in it.

Funny, I hate the zippered outfits. I have some with zippers and some with snaps, and I always use the ones with snaps. I don't like that I have to open the entire zipper for diaper changes. My baby gets cold and starts screaming, but with the snaps, I can open just the bottom leaving the rest of him still dressed.

I like the snaps too. Since you are having a summer baby, I would buy I package of newborn onesies. That way, you have it if you need it, if you don't, you are not out a ton of money. When we brought Steven home, he was 7 lbs (i think), 0-3 month clothes SWAM on him (but we used them when we needed to)

Old Navy (and i believe gap) has a little bundle section (check out the web sites) What they post is honestly all you need to start out with (we still use them as basics)

Although Steven is skinny at 15 months (19 lbs 10 oz) he is tall at almost 29 inches, so we have to bump him up to 12-18 month clothes. He ALWAYS has height issues with his clothing.

I had my son in August and he pretty much wore onesies for the first few months (Northern CA). We also had a TON of those cotton pants and socks, so he lived in those. For winter, we found tiny sweats, and he lived in those. We didn't do the "sleep n' play" things because I didn't like all of the freakin' buttons on them and they didn't have ones that zipped up.
As for sizes, I would get a few newborn items, but mostly the 0 to 3 month sizes. My kids were both over 8 lbs and 22 inches long, they grew out of the newborn stuff pretty fast, but they did wear them for only the first week or so.
