She's not too old but
When she's nursing and "pumping your boob" with one hand and talking on her "cell phone" with the other hand.

Solomon does the same thing! The funniest is in the bath when he's kneeling naked in front of me, nursing on one boob, "pumping" the other boob, and waving his toy shark around with the other hand.

This drives me a little crazy. It seems like she wants to switch sides after only 5 minutes.

So far Lydia has tried to suck her thumb while nursing and tried to blow spit bubbles while nursing. I can't wait till she starts talking!

Those are such cute stories! Medussa, I love that she calls it "kiki."
JJ must just be a really greedy child, because when he's nursing, he is really focussed on eating, and he doesn't try to do much else (I also don't nurse him while he or I are doing other things so that could be part of it.) He does like to explore my face, touching my nose, putting his hands in my mouth, etc. and he will smile up at me, but generally nursing is the only time when he will stay still! He still likes the same cradle position as when he was a newborn only now his legs are dangling all over the place!

Since I have a toddler nursling now, I had to revive this thread and add to it.
Yesterday, Dylan was trying to nurse and read the paper (a grocery store flyer) at the same time. He was getting really irritated that the nipple kept slipping out of his mouth when he turned his head to read.
And for a few days now, when he is finished, he will take the breast with both hands and try to point it up to my mouth as if trying to say "Here, you try some." He looks at me so incredulously when I tell him no thank you.

that. was. HILARIOUS! i busted out laughing at this.
my husband would walk past our son and me, and without missing a beat say, "his foot's almost grazing the carpet." they were ... but his point was that if his legs are so long that his feet are touching the floor, he might be too old for breastfeeding. what did he know?
our daughter was 3 and quite verbal. my left breast always produced less milk than my right one. after nursing from the left side first, she'd tell me that "the nip-nip's all gone from this one" or "the otha one pleeze" and would then switch sides in my lap all on her own, grab my right breast and begin to nurse from it.
on some days when they were older toddlers, it was so methodical that i'd look down and realize, "oh, i'm breastfeeding him/her" because they practically would climb up and latch on with no assistance from me; i was basically along for the ride. ha!

Awww, I'm so glad this thread was bumped. I'd forgotten about her cute little antics.
I love how creative our kids are about getting their mommy milk.

Yesterday, my daughter started shaking her butt to Michael Jackson--while nursing the whole time of course!

cute stories except I have been trying to wean for a while now. My story is exactly a year old. Maybe she's just not ready (25 months). Is there such a thing as natural weaning (like it happens without you trying)?

That would be child-led weaning. Some kids really do wean themselves when they're ready, but it may be much later than the mother wants! I know a woman who allowed/allows her children to wean themselves and her daughter nursed until 5, her older son is now 5 and still nursing (along with his 2.5y/o brother, and the mom being pregnant again).
I think there can be gentle ways for the mother to encourage weaning, though. A friend of mine established a special nursing chair, so they HAD to go to the chair whenever the daughter wanted to nurse. If she was too consumed with whatever else she was doing, she'd sometimes decide it wasn't worth it to go all the way to the chair. Or the mom would say "quick noonies" (their word for nursing) and they could nurse for the count of 10, or something like that. Of course distraction/redirection too. I'm not trying to wean Solomon, but sometimes if it's not a good time to nurse I distract/redirect and he's usually fine (I do it BEFORE he actually asks though, when I can see the signs that he may ask soon).

aw you guys are all making me soo sad. I was done nursing my son at around 1 yr old. I had family asking me at 9 months why I wasn't trying to get him off the breast the last time I nursed him he was around 1 and bit me and then looked up and smiled and that was pretty much the end. I miss nursing sooo much I never thought I'd miss it like I do. Enjoy nursing while it lasts you will miss it one day

You know your baby is 'too old' when he starts standing up and shaking his booty to music, all without unlatching. This is the younger one btw. Yeah, he wants to be a dancer like his bro.

When you're nursing your child to sleep and he halfway-unlatches to mumble "Now I know my ABC's <suck suck> Next time won't you sing with <suck suck> MEEEEE!!!!!!!!!" and then resumes nursing like nothing ever happened

You guys have some talented children; they can nurse AND dance at the same time? Now that's some serious multi-tasking!
