To PT or not?

I got a question for all of you protein gurus out there. I am transitioning and the 5 in of new growth I have is dry and i'm starting to get breakage along the line of demarcation. The bottom half of my hair is OC'd. It's limp and the curls don't stay together in their groups. The bottom half is also heat damaged so bad in some places it's pin straight. The question is should I do a full on PT and risk drying out the new growth more or should I just leave it? I do have a fair amount of products with protein in them that I have been using on a regular basis but it seems the ends need something stronger. My hair is mostly fine with a few coarse patches thrown in around the hairline with what seems to be a high porosity on the bottom half and the new growth is closer to normal porosity. Any suggestions would be welcome. TIA.

You could try using a protein-treatment only on the ends of your hair. I've done that before. That way you wouldn't have to worry about hurting the new growth.
-3a/3b, fine, very thick, normal por., normal elast., long, dye- free (CG since Nov. '11)
-CO: every other night (air dry) VO5 (various scents)
-Low poo (As needed): ION Color Defense Clarifying, Yes To line, Giovanni TTTT
-RO: GVP CB
-LI: Giovanni DLI or a tiny bit of my co-wash or RO (sometimes none)
-Styling: BYZ Noodle Head Tame your Curls Mousse
-PT: ION Effective Care

How did I not think of that? I'm going to blame it on the 4 hours I've sleep I've had in 3 days. Thanks.

And do a moisturizing, protein-free deep conditioning treatment right after the PT too!

Good luck with your hair journey--I grew out my relaxer too a few years ago, so I know how it feels Just remember to be patient and gentle with your hair
As I was getting ready to do this I noticed something. My new growth seemed to flash dry and as I was blotting the ends water just kept dripping off like someone had turned a faucet on. So I started thinking and realized it takes more water to get my hair wet in the shower than it used to. Is it possible that my undamaged hair is a lower porosity than I thought? If that is the case what are the pros and cons for using protein?
