I recently got back in a CG routine and have been doing it for about a week. I am also using a new conditioner that has a LOT of protein in it (hair keratin protein + amino acids) and my hair has been responding REALLY well to it. My curls have been tighter and more defined, although I was still battling frizz.
So today I decided I was going to try IAgirl's gelatin PT. So here's what I did:
- low poo'd with GN Pure Clean
- made the gelatin with honey and a bit of lime juice (few drops)
- put the gelatin into my wet hair and covered with hair cap (15 min or so)
- rinsed out.
- followed with HE Hello Hydration conditioner (generous amounts) and left that on for 15 min under a hair cap
- rinsed that out
My hair was significantly less frizzy BUT my 2C/3A curls were nearly all gone. It was a very relaxed wave.
I'm really confused because my hair was responding so well to the protein-filled conditioner and now it completely reacted differently to a protein treatment.
Any ideas what happened and what I can do to get my curls back?
It could simply be too much protein for your hair. Does your hair feel straw like and stiff? When I do IAgirl's gelatin PT, I leave it in my hair for about 5-6 minutes and then leave in my deep treatment for about a half hour. Perhaps if you're using the protein-rich conditioner daily, the 15 minute PT was just too much?
Also, I think the HE hello hydration has dimethicone in it. Which isn't a problem if you're using the GF pure clean shampoo regularly, since it has ammonium lauryl sulfate.
No, it wasn't stiff... it was just limp. I added some more SN Strawberry conditioner overnight and rinsed it out this morning and my hair is back to normal (sort of).
I'll have to double check the ingredients on the HE conditioner and the GF... I didn't realize they might be no-nos.
Still trying to figure out how to get rid of the frizzies.
I'll try the PT again but for a shorter length of time and see how that works.
Sounds like IAGirl's pt on top of your protein rich daily condish tipped your hair over into protein overload. A good dose of protein perks curls up if you're overconditioned, but too much protein can pull the curl out, in addition to leaving hair dry, straw-like, and crunchy. Check out the first pic here. It's a good illustration of overproteined hair.
I got my curl back! I think you guys are right - may have been a protein overload.
Although I think a daily dose of protein through my conditioner is working really well, I should watch those long treatments. Maybe it was just the gelatin?
Today I used AVG in my hair and my curls are amazing. So glad my hair bounced back quickly.
