Help starting proteins, once a week or daily, best drugstore products?

Ive discovered my hair may not be fond of glycerin, polyquats, much oils, or shea butter (still checking the oil and shea butter theory out). I think id benefit from a good clarifying treatment SUGGESTIONS NEEDED!! And good protein treatments, but where do i start with introducing protein, and in what products, if not all of them?

I feel like I'm stalking you all over NC! You can clarify with any clear sulphate shampoo you have lying around, or even with shower gel if it doesn't contain ingredients that are likely to build up.

You can use hydrolysed protein in any or all of your products, but start slow and work up, don't overload your hair. You could try a basic DIY gelatin treatment (see DIY board) followed by a deep condition if you need it, just go for a weak mix with the gelatin and don't leave it on long.

Or you could buy a conditioner with protein in for wash out or for leave in, or add a little Colorful neutral protein filler (Sallys) to a product you already have. A leave in will likely more patch any damage on the surface of your hair and act as a film former helping the cuticle lay flat. Deep treatments penetrate so the proteins strengthen the hair as well as adhering to the outside.

Experimenting is important: my hair is colour damaged and porous so does need protein, but the hardcore drying types made it feel like straw. I get on better with a deep treatment or leave in within a conditioner base, that seems to help the protein penetrate but not build up too much on the surface and maintain hair's softness. Other people are the opposite.
