Default Mushy hair?

Can someone tell me what mushy hair is? I know protein craving hair can get that way but I'm not really sure what that is.

Back on Cones,so now my routine is,wash with Deva No-Poo every other day or so. Occasionally use 365 sulfate free, maybe use low sulfate shampoo mixed with conditioner once every two weeks are longer. I condition with Aussie Moist or HEHH. I style with a little GF TN,and finish up with tons of GN Pure Clean Smoothing Cream. No frizz...slippy, happy hair.

I think I probably am. At least at the roots while I feel the length still benefits from moisture.

But the characterization of "mushy hair" what exactly does that mean? I don't know if I have it cause I'm not sure what it is.

Default I've been there...

I had "mushy" hair a while back when my hair was over processed. My hair felt like taffy when wet. It was incredibly stretchy and if I held it in a pony tail it felt like one solid mass. You couldn't feel any of the individual hairs. It was also very floppy. Mine is a pretty extreme example but it is definitely a very strange feeling. Oh. This is weird but, it felt too slick. For example, if I shampooed it it felt like it was overloaded with conditioner when it should have felt squeaky clean.

I think "mushy" hair is the kind of thing that, if you have it, you definitely know it, there's no question. When my hair was mushy, I knew instantly the first time I wet it that there was something wrong. But agin, mine might be an extreme example.

If you are questioning it, maybe you are just a bit over conditioned and a little protein will help.

Hmm....ok.

I know the top front and sides, when there wet just the act of putting my fingers under my hair to wash my scalp feels like it's breaking hairs. The part I'm most concerned with is the part closest to my scalp so it's been hard for me to tell, like u said when it was u held it in a pointy tail it was just one big lump of hair, that may be the case for me but it's just the short part so it's hard to determine.

I do think I'm definitely over conditioned in parts. So should I stop using conditioner without proteins for a while, or alternate?

This article explains protein vs. moisture hair breakage, it's a really good read.

I would try a few protein treatments in the next few weeks to see if it helps.

Thanks Sixelamy...I'll read that

And Firefox, I did shampoo with regular shampoo on Saturday after a prepoo conditioner the night before. The shampoo I used does have some protein in it and I did do some dc's with protein conditioners since then.

I think maybe I do have this mushy hair. I just got out of the shower and I was trying to feel the parts that I worry about while it was wet. It does clump together like one big glob it is really limp right there and since it's my roots when it's wet that part is completely plastered to my head...

I'm one of the furloughed federal employees so I've had nothing to do at home but Pinterest and messageboards....been researching a lot of stuff about hair. Will have to wait till. Go back to work before I can afford to go to the salon though....lol

Should I maybe find a leave in with protein? Lately I've been only using CurlySexyHair to style with and that has been all I needed for hold. It has some protein I think but I'm not sure. I was looking at that henna placenta leave in spray, maybe only for those problem areas. What do u think?

Default Personally, small steps work best for me

Yeah, I can see how you might have trouble deciding since it's just at the top. Does it feel like the hairs are snapping or more just stretching apart until they are in two pieces/broke off. Really, if you think of a big blob of taffy on a puller that's the best example I can give for what my hair was like.

I've had the best luck when I've taken smaller steps and reassessed over the course of a few days. Maybe the iagirls protein treatment for about 10 minutes. Then see how it feels. If you need more you can do another one in a day or so. You could also try a rinse out with protein left in for a while in a steamy shower and do that for a few days in a row and see if that heps. I don't use leave ins with protein so I don't know about that. What I wouldn't do is add protein in everything all at once, ie., treatment, rinse out, leave in.

Yeah,....I'm gonna try not top ur too much protein in ...that's a whole new problem. But the top close to my root part does seem to clump together....and it's really limp and will stick to my scalp if I don't manipulate it. I think I probably am over conditioned. I gave to pay more attention to protein in the regular products I use I think

Yes MollysMom,
I think it is kinda like the taffy puller thing...especially around the temples. Way too soft! It stretches a bit and breaks, mostly when it's wet and I put my fingers under it to wash my scalp. I'm heading to Walmart Saturday and I may pick up some protein type leave in like that henna placenta spray. I guess I'll continue using moisturizing conditioner too. I also have some good oils and creams for the LCO method thingy.

I found some Hask placenta leave in. I have this Palmers coconut oil formula protein pack sitting on my problem area....and I have Aussie moist deep conditioner on the length that usually benefits from moisture. I'll start spritzing some of that Hask stuff in that front part as a part of regular styling. I'm still using moisturizing conditioners in the shower and this Hollywood beauty olive oil cream I have that's super moisturizing, it's a leave in. I have some Shea moisture no sulphate shampoo to maybe use weekly and a regular shampoo every 2 weeks to keep from getting build up. I'm staying away from my no-poo and cowashing for a bit. I'm might do it again Ina month or two but I'll be much less vigorous with my scalp scrubbing.

Hmm.. The SM shampoo will not get out cones, I hope you are aware of that? You will need something with at least coco betaine to do that, if not sulfates. Maybe that is the problem that you are having? I would clarify a bit more often.

What's the Scoop on Silicones?

Yeah...I know it won't so that's why I'll use the sulphate shampoo maybe every 2 weeks
