Is this a Normal Reaction to Protein?

This morning I dissolved one packet of gelatin in 1/3 cup of water. When it cooled I added 1 teaspoon cider vinegar, 2 teaspoons Suave Coconut condish, and a few drops of coconut oil and mixed well.
I washed my hair and blotted out the excess water then began to apply the mixture. At the back of my head(from hairline up 3" or so) it spread easily....at the crown, the minute the mixture hit my hair it felt like stiff straw! I freaked a little so I rinsed it out immediately.
Is this an expected reaction to this protein treatment?
Not an expected reaction per se- it just sounds like the front part of your hair just didn't need the treatment as much. Your front pieces may have different needs from the back too. One of my first treatments felt like that when I used mayo in my mix. I had to add extra conditioner to spread the treatment out easier. Now that I don't use any oil besides what the science-y hair blog recipe has I haven't had that happen.

I agree, sounds like you didn't need a treatment in that area.

Another thought next time would be to leave out the ACV.

I just did one today- I have ACV but only about 5 drops worth. At most 1/8 of a teaspoon.

And I did put a bit of heat (just a warmed up damp towel) and left it on like 15 min. and I had great results.
You said your hair felt stiff before rinsing it out. That's normal. Gelatin will solidify and make your hair stiff until you rinse it out. If, however, it was stiff after rinsing out, then you probably didn't need the protein.
3b, low porosity, high density, medium hair

Current Products:
  • Dr. Mercola Shampoo or diluted sulfate
  • Either Giovanni Tea Tree Conditioner or Nature's Gate Pomegranate Sunflower Conditioner
  • Gelatin as protein treatment
  • Flaxseed + gelatin as hair gel
Techniques: Scrunching + Plopping Overnight

I do the same mix! I didn't think about adding conditioner tho, good idea
