Post Your 'Problem Curl' Symptoms!

I decided this was a good place for all those with problem hair to post their symptoms, and hopefully we'll get the experts in here to tell us what the problem might be along with possible solutions.

I'll start... *Ahem*

My hair is mostly medium-textured 4A at the top and sides, with fine 3C at the nape.

Once upon a time my curls were bouncy, shiny, well-defined, and clumpy until I got my hair cut. (We could stop right here and say the problem is just simply that my hair lady used dull scissors! But I'll continue...)

My hair has been tangly and feeling dry since my last haircut about 3 months ago. It hardly ever breaks at all, even when stretched. However, when it's wet it doesn't feel smooth at the ends. The curls easily form, but they won't clump... gel, no gel, leave-in, no leave-in, expensive organic stuff, cheap stuff, oils, butters, waxes...you get it.

I've tried deep conditioners with or without proteins, with or without heat.... (Heat seems to tangle it worse).

The results are always the same. There are no split ends, just "frazzly-looking" curls.

Several days ago, the seborrhea was acting up, so I used a sulfate dandruff shampoo (Maximum Strength Head & Shoulders - harsh stuff!). I followed that with a moisturizing conditioner (Renpure), and as a leave-in, I mixed Biotera Gel with Jessicurl Too! Shea and let it air dry. (I never blow dry.) That was actually my best hair day in a long time!

Today, I co-washed, and used all the same products without the sulfate shampoo. It's back to the rough, fuzzy ends... *Sigh*

The odd thing is that once it dries, it doesn't really get frizzy. (It shrinks up to a poof, but I attribute that partly to the humid, stormy weather we've had lately.)

Any thoughts? Do I need more moisture or less? More protein or less?... Anyone?

Who else has problem hair symptoms? Maybe together we can address them here.

If you read this entire post, I thank you for your time.

This might be waaay off, but, do you have hard water? Some people sound like that when they have hard water, and shampooing seemed to help you.

Other than that, I have no helpful suggestions.
Kiva! Microfinance works.

Med/Coarse, porous curly.

It's hard to tell, because the water in my area here in South Carolina isn't nearly as mineral-laden as the water where I grew up in California.

However, I believe they have recently added more fluoride to the local water supply, so that made me wonder if that had any effect on my hair (and my itchy skin).

Thanks so much, Red!!!

Read your post but have no suggestions beyond what RCC already offered.

Sorry you're having hair trouble but am sure you'll get some helpful responses.

Kathymack is a genius maybe she'll weigh in.

OK... Since I can't afford a water softener for my house, I installed a shower filter, instead. (Actually, dear old Dad did... He's so good to his daughter! ...)

I did an ACV rinse this morning (with Dasani water straight out of the fridge --woo, that's cold!--).

Did my usual conditioner and styling routine and it seemed to make a difference. (And my skin is softer, though my head still itches a bit.)

My hair seemed somewhat smoother. I sealed with coconut oil and the curls have a little more shine today, but there's still not much clumping. I'm going to call my hair lady, since it's about time for another trim anyway.

Maybe I need to change my products again... I dunno...I got too much stuff as it is! (Is there a Dr. House for hair?)

Thanks again for all your help, Ladies!

Hey, hey... he-e-e-y-ey!...
Listening to Train's latest song...
And still walking around with rough, dull hair...

Who else is having trouble and how do we deal with it?

(Yes, this was my idea of a *bump*.)

All right I'll post my wavy woes and hope someone has some suggestions.

I have 2C (maybe more like 1C) Fiii hair. It's super coarse (Asian) and super thick and only my top layer really waves on its own without product.

I've read that coarse haired people tend to not like protein all that much so I've been experimenting. The first time I used SS FHG I had fantastic waves (it was my only styler as well!) but since then I've used the FHG and CEJ (not together) with protein free products and have had droopy, loose waves.

Any suggestions why the FHG only worked that first time?

Dear AsianRunner,
I can only say that so many times my hair loves something the first time then it's not so great the next time. It's so complex with weather temp - humidity changing.

The first time I used LA Curl Looks my hair loved it. Next time and after it frizzed. I came to the conclusion maybe since it has protein my hair might have needed a little, but then too much is no good. It really is maddening!
