With protein:

Shea Moisture Curl & Shine (the entire line) *silk protein
AO GPB Shampoo & Conditioner *oat & milk protein
Marie Dean Curly Styling Cream *silk protein

With protein analogues:

Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Line (all products) *kelp & avocado oil
AO Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner *hops
AO White Camellia Conditioner *hops
KBB Simply Conditioner *jojoba oil
KBB Hair Nectar *coconut oil
KBB Moisture Mist *avocado oil, jojoba oil
Marie Dean Simply Conditioner *avocado oil, jojoba oil
Marie Dean Shea Cocoa Hair Lotion (ProLess) *jojoba oil, avocado oil
Giovanni Products (entire line) *various extracts
KMF Upper Management Gel *yeast

Other:

Flax Seed Gel

I am extremely protein sensitive, with naturally coarse hair, that is slightly porous due to highlighting.

I can use some products with protein analogues (other than kelp/algae & coconut) on a sporadic, but not regular, basis.

My hair seemed to like jojoba oil & avocado oil at first, but got super dry & poofy after a few weeks of regular use.

My hair loathes hops, yeast & most plant "extracts", which seem to be added to a lot of protein-free products. I am on the fence with horsetail & nettles. I can do aloe juice when blended into products, but not on its own.

I also avoid polyquats & most cationic surfactants (except stearamidopropyl dimethylamine), due to buildup issues.

This post has literally saved my head. I could not figure out for the life of me why the ENTIRE Shea Moisture Line simply would not work...well now I know why. I'm fine haired, protein and glycerin sensitive.

The worst day was when I used Tresseme Naturals (this alone does not seem to bother my hair) but the insult to injury came when I used Organic Root Stimulator Curls Unleashed Take Command Curl Defining Cream. I used Shea Moisture Shea Butter Reconstructing Conditioner (don't know why as it's been weighing my hair down and leaving a greasy feeling in my hair for a while now), Jojoba Oil as a sealer and went to sleep. I had great definition thanks to my braid out, but I was pulling clumps of hair out with my hands for the next three days. Scary. I've never shed so much hair in my life and it was terrifying. This was four days ago and the greasy, weighed down feeling is just now going away. I'm washing tonight and Poo'ing with my Tresseme Naturals.

So, no more Shea Moisture and no more ORS Line. And it looks like no more Jojoba either.

My List:
Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie (horrible. Weighs my hair down at first and then dries it out, and as a last insult it shrinks my curls terribly. No definition either.)

Shea Moisture Shea Butter and Argan Oil Reconstructing Conditioner

Shea Moisture Thickening Growth Milk

Shea Moisture Shea Butter Intensive Reconstructing Hair Mask

ORS Curls Unleashed Take Command Curl Defining Cream (this stuff smells awful too, so I definitely will not be using it again)

Moroccan Argan Oil in any brand

Organic Coconut Oil

Eco Styler Olive oil gel, I bought a huge jar a didn't want it to go to waste, so I tried to make a custard using oil&conditioners, made my hair even worse and my hair took 2 days to recover, It makes me afraid to try any other gel or the kinky curly custard

I didn't like the Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel either. No matter how I tried to use it, it just did not work and dried my hair out awfully.

If Shea Moisture is a problem it's as likely to be the shea butter as anything else, that is known to build up or weigh down some hair types. This 'protein analogues' stuff sounds like pseudoscience to me, is there any published research on this?

The vast range of ingredients being blamed have completely different methods of affecting the hair, you might think you have similar symptoms it doesn't mean you have the same diagnosis.

I agree that it can be a multitude of things. Besides the protein, I truly believe my hair dislikes SheaMoisture because of all the heavy shea, coconut and aloe.
