Aloe Vera GEL - FOTE

Hi, I know some people are sensitive to Aloe Vera... Why? Is there protein in it, or are people sensitive for another reason.

I ask, because I want to try it...and I'm very protein sensitive

TIA

I've never heard of that. My advice would be to go to Whole Foods and get a sample to try.

Hi Thanks, I actually meant to say Aloe Vera "Gel". I just bought a
24 oz bottle FOTE and added some to homemade Flax Seed Gel and it worked really well....

I am usually able to use wheat or silk protein for 1 day with good results, 2nd day of use all hell breaks loose LOL.

Hoping that is not the case this time....

I did use FOTE on my 5 year old daughters hair today and it worked well, her hair is 4a Fine, so if it doesnt work for my 3c coarse, I will just use on her.

Thanks.

Although FOTE does not contain protein, it does dry me out. I stopped adding it to my flax seed gel for that reason. Someone suggested that I use the Aloe gel that is edible and has NO PRESERVATIVES. The person thought that the additives were drying me out.

Good luck to you let me know how it works.

I believe I read somewhere (ms gg's blog maybe) that aloe vera is essentially collagen....and collagen is a protein? I've known for a while that aloe vera gel dries my hair out like a desert so I accepted that as truth I can't look it up for you right now sorry. Link a little later.

Thanks guys, I bet it does have collagen. I tried some in homemade FSG (2 tbsp) in about 8 ounces. The first day... My hair was GREAT. (my hairs usual reaction to protein) The second day using... my hair started to feel like plastic... 3 time.. I just threw the batch out and made some more without aloe..

Oh well!

Amber is correct and I stand corrected. No wonder the Aloe vera dries me out! Thank you for the knowledge Amber, because even though I was deleting Aloe from my FSG, I did try to spritz with it when I got desperate. Wrong move. I will eliminate it for sure now.

Curly4, I feel ya when you say you can do the protein one day. But then how long do you go inbetween before you use the protein again. Like one week or what?

Oh... Goin Grey, How I wish I had a method to my madness LOLLLLLL I surely don't. Usually if I use something with protein, it's by accident. I really didn't think FOTE had protein.. now I know.

Eventually I will get there. I'm thinking, using a product with protein might be Ok for me 1x a month? if that.

Also, I currently use and love Devacurl One condition and it contains HOPS, which I found it is a protein. I guess that one does not bother my hair. Who knows. It's so hard to find a hair product that doesn't have protein!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Curly that is so funny because I take a hit of protein when ever everthing else is failing and I'm sitting here thinking everyone else has it figured out! Haaa!

Not for nothing but I believe all products in my siggy are protein free, besides the suave coconut.

I swear I'm going to get it together one of these days. My hair hates proteins with a passion. I was wondering why after I used the FOTE Aloe Vera Gel, my hair was very dry and hard. I had to go through and dust a few ends after using.

Thanks so much for pointing this out

Hi
Aloe Vera gel - the one w/out any additives - should be okay - FOTE has a ton of stuff. You can get an aloe vera gel from the health food stores that is just the gel from the plant leaves - nothing else. Hope this helps. I have the same prob's w/ proteins - one day is okay, 2 pushing it - after that it's total barbie doll, nasty hair. I've tried the Jason's aloe vera - that has glycerin in it. Just the plain gel on it's own seems to be the best. Mother Nature does know best ; )

Aloe Vera gel dries out my hair too but I am curious about Aloe Vera juice. If the gel dries me out will the juice have the same effect? I know it sounds like a dumb question ... just trying to find my miracle cure

I just bought some aloe vera gel. I've heard so many things about it, that it can leave hair crunchy (if used alone but others get good results with it alone), it can be used as a gel (I guess for thin/medium hair) or as a leave-in or to revive 2nd day curls (which is what I want to use it for). In general though, throughout different forums and sources, I've heard that it is good for hair. I guess it's like most things with hair, you got to experiment with it, so wish me luck!

But, more about proteins....right now I don't use products that have a lot of protein (if there is any, it's near the bottom of the ingredient list). I haven't done any deep protein treatments or anything like that yet so I'm not sure if my hair is sensitive . But I'm not sure I understand it's importance, I know it repairs damaged hair but my hair isn't really damaged. So what else does it do? I'm still new at this so anything will help!

Lastly, how do you curlies put all that bottom info in your posts??? (like about hair type and whatnot)
Above the post reply button (the very top one) theres a green bar (sorry I'm not very techy). On the left click on 'User CP'. On the left panel under "Settings and Options" click on "Edit Signature". Hope that made sense ... please post if I haven't explained properly.

Deekeshay,
The flax seed gel I make at home really was a great thing for me, and like Curly4Days says...I had to nix the aloe vera...and strip it down to just flax seed...then little by little I can add one or two ingredients, now I know I can handle agave in it and magnesium oil (to add curl).

The protein does sneek up in a lot of things that's why I'm done trying new things, too much money down the drain, when I find they have protein.

As far as I know, aloe vera is not a collagen. It does however, increase collagen content in tissue -

Influence of Aloe vera on collagen characteristics... [Mol Cell Biochem. 1998] - PubMed result

It is not a protein, but it contains protein in amino acids (AA are the building blocks of protein).

I'm extremely protein sensitive but do not have issues with aloe vera - KCCC used to be the only gel I could use because so many contain wheat protein, which makes my hair turn evil. FOTE is one of my favorite gels, I don't even know why I buy all of these expensive ones...
