Default Protein rant!

I noticed every product I purchase has some type of protein in it. I just realized that I'm protein sensitive. After I use a product with protein my scalp itches or my hair gets dry. Some things I didn't know were considered a protein were aloe vera, soybean oil, and hydrolyzed collagen. I had to give up my Giovanni Tea Tree Conditioner and Leave-In. The shampoo is fine. Now, I'm scared to put anything on my hair. My hair dry. I have a TWA. I just put water and oil on my hair today after doing a low-poo and conditioner. The conditioner I use is VO5 Raspberry. I may have to take other people's advice and use conditioner as a leave in and moisturizer.

Default protein rant

Congratulations of finding you are protein sensitive. This small bit of info was the beginning to my hair success.
Every product endorsement was a waste of money to me. People loved this product or that, I bought them...and wound up with straw hair and empty pockets.
Once you let the protein go (now I use only silk protein once a week or every other week). The world became happy because my hair is happy.

Mmhmm!!! Every hair product seems to have protein! Doesn't it just make you sick?

It does make me sick. I decided to keep the Giovanni Direct Leave In until I either buy KCKT or Aubrey Organics.

I just responded to another thread (currlyQ4days) thread.
When I have had enough of proteins, glycern, parabens and silicones I use:
Kinky Curly Come Clean then
Knot Today as a conditioner and as a leave in, followed by the original curly custard.
Takes a few times to figure out how much to use.
You really don't need a lot of the custard. Too much makes your hair feel gummy.
I put some in my palms and mix it with water when applying.

My hair is so dry from using products with protein. I had to use a sulfate shampoo today. It made my hair soft before I conditioned it. Once I conditioned it, it seem to get a bit dry. I use suave ocean breeze conditioner. I just used some olive oil after I washed out the conditioner. My hair hates everything. Glycerin, aloe vera, and protein (of course). I may have to co-wash for a while to get my hair back to like I want it to be.

I hear you girl! I think it is safe to say that I am EXTREMELY protein sensitive! I can't use Aloe, anything that says protein, Amino Acids, even plant extracts! Ugh! It's so frustrating! Wish I could suggest something, but I am on the look myself. Also, be aware of other things that act like proteins like jojoba oil, coconut oil, wheat germ oil, soybean oil, brewer's yeast extract, and some plant extracts. I suggest you do a search on plant extracts that act like proteins, and on amino acids which act like proteins. Do not buy Aubrey Organics, found out the hard way today that it DOES have protein in it!

Thanks! I actually did some research on proteins. That is the reason why it's so frustrating because everything has protein. Right now, I use Giovanni Tea Treat Shampoo (it has protein, but I haven't had any issues with it), Suave apple conditioner, and Queen Helene Cholesterol (add olive oil). As a leave in and moisturizer, I dampen my hair, put a little bit of suave in my hand, use a little water, rub both in my hands, and place some throughout my hair. seal with olive oil. That's it. I got this from members from Black Hair Media.

Oh okay! It is very frustrating! It's enough that I don't use cones, the proteins eliminates so many products! I thought that the Queen Helene one has mineral oil? I used to LOVE that one before I went natural, but I thought I remember it having it. I tried to use V05 as a leave in and it didn't work well. It left my hair super dry. It might have been the gel I was using, might have to try it again with a different gel, and using a bit of water!

So what is a good shampoo without protein?

Queen Helene does have mineral oil. I was reading a blog about it today about how it can dry your hair out. I am going to deep condition with a reg. conditioner and add some olive oil. I think when it comes to our hair, it's best to make your own products. I use suave as a leave in. I dilute it with water and oil. I use a spray bottle to make it easier. I'm going to make my own leave in. I really don't like using rinse out conditioner as a leave in. I am because that's all I have. I'm going to go to one the health food stores in town and buy some oils like peppermint, tea tree, and olive oil. Then I'm going to probably use aloe vera juice, if I can find some. Use that as a leave in. You can find some people on ebay who make their own stuff as well. You might check them out. I found one, but it had wheat protein in it. It did make my hair soft, but I'm trying to bring my moisture level back up.

As for shampoos, I haven't found a sulfate poo without protein. Giovanni tea treat is okay to use. So is organix. Most are good to use if you plan on washing every two weeks. I haven't had any problems with those.

You may want to try unrefined raw shea butter as a sealer. I may use this too. I know you can use shea butter as a moisturizer when you whip it with other oils, like olive oil, coconut oil, etc.
