How does your hair react to protein?

I ask because I think I am protein sensitive, but I am not 100% sure, either way I stay away from products with protein. When I use anything with wheat protein, silk protein, or coconut my hair feels rough and crunchy, even after the product is rinsed out. With AOHR my hair feels ok while its on my hair but once I rinse it feels like hay or horse hair. The shampoo makes my hair feel stripped and dry, even when the hair is still wet. Ecostyler Protein gel also makes my hair hard, crunchy, and more shrinky. The other ecostyler gels work for me. Also, Organix coconut poo and conditioner make my hair feel gross too. Is this what usually happens when your hair doesn't like protein?

Sounds like you are protein sensitive. My hair looks very frizzy and flyaway when I use a protein product, especially wheat protein! My hair can tolerate small amounts of silk protein (like a rinse out cond, or a protein gel) once every two weeks or so...but that is it...no more...and it could do very well with less.

my hair goes all straw like and breaks off easy, also i have no slip so even if i carefully try to run my fingers through my hair it'll snap off badly and ill be left with hand fulls of hair :/ my hair used to love protein, but since ive came back to australia, (think high humidity) its hated protein, i have a protein low poo and i can use it once a week, providing i use condish after it

my hair: 3c, high porosity, high density and coarse hair (i think i finally figured that all out)
my hair loves conditioner only styling!
my hair goal length is bra strap length when curly.

I have wondered if I'm sensitive to wheat proteins, but it's very hard to tell. I'm sensitive to many things and often get skin reactions on my face, neck and hands from different ingredients. I've found several products that contain wheat proteins also contain aloe. I've often wondered if that's actually the culprit. Now that im paying attention I've found many products that have harmed my hair in the past contain aloe. My hair is a very high porosity and protein starved so I'm trying to narrow down what will work best before I do treatments. I can't take another big mishap. My mother actually had the organix's coconut milk shampoo & conditioner. She gave me the remains. I just used it and my hair seemed to adore it, and Im pleased to say i had no skin reactions. Whew! Fingers crossed!! Good luck to you as well. It is frustrating when a product turns your hair to straw, and incredibly hard to know if it's one variety of protein, all, or... when using a pre mixed/manufactured product, if it's actually the protein or an added ingredient. Sigh

Fmasuhr: Maybe I'm protein sensitive because I live in n oh-so-humid South Florida. Oh well either way my hair is much better without it.

Fifi: YES! Its very frustrating when stuff isn't working in your hair and you blindly trying to find something that will work. I'm glad (after 4 years) I figured out my hair is protein sensitive. At least now I know to avoid that when looking at ingredients. If your hair like Organix coconut, you might not be protein sensitive, my hair hates that stuff! Curly hair is all trial-and-error but that gets really expensive! Good luck!

I live in So. Florida, too. I always thought my hair loved protein but I think I overloaded and my hair looked and felt like scare crow stuffing! I have learned that my hair is protein sensitive and also really dislikes aloe (which is a bummer cause I have it growing all over my yard). I'm currently loving tresemme naturals condish as well as garnier fructis sleek & shine new formula. Good luck everyone and thanks for sharing your stories. It makeshift curls feel less alone.

I tend to do good, at least no immediate or obvious reactions, to a great deal of proteins. Now that's just products containing them. I've never done a PT (other than mayo on the hair as a child) and the only products I've used, day to day, over many years, that contain proteins are finishing products. It's been silk, soy and keratin in mild very mild doses. After a horrible hack dye job I tried It's a 10 leave in conditioner, trying to get my hair healthier for my first color correct. It has wheat protein and it came close to melting my hair. I had to get damage cut out, weeks later. I have gone over it's ingredients with a fine tooth comb, and any other product that did the same. Wheat protein, aloe and sunflower seed extract oil seem to be 3 of common culprits. Along with chemicals that I've been researching, but most have turned out to be not so bad. I have been told people with gluten intolerance can't do wheat protein on the hair. I've never been officially told that I have it but a allergy doc did tell me to try a gluten and sugar free diet, to see if it helped with other issues I had in the past. Lord, idk, but I'm gonna figure it out

I'll hush after this... It might just be the fact that I can only do wheat if it's followed up with an incredible deep conditioner, because it's such a strong protein. kathymack shared some links with me and it seems like that would be an excellent protein, for the issues I have. I've only used leave in's or milder conditioners with it in it that were not followed up by anything deeper.

I absolutely understand that. I have to update something I said. The It's a 10 infact contained silk protein, not wheat. I read a incorrect ingredients list and found several with better information. I know I'm good with silk, so it was something else. I'm leaning more and more toward allergies with wheat, and other ingredients put in protein treatments. Just putting this out there because it might be helpful to someone: I have severe plant, grass, tree, hay, a.k.a pollen allergies. They have become miserably worse in the past 2 years, due to the increasingly bad winters where I live. I live in the smoky mountains of NC, btw. Much mist, fog, dew, humidity. I'm starting to pay more attention to plant extracts put in products. Im not allergic to every plant, so its going to be much trial and error. Think it's wise for me. I have a horrible hay allergy, and hay & wheat are from the same family. I don't think that protein will ever react well on me inhaled or applied topically. After re reading ingredients in a face product that made me break out, itch and swell, I found it contained aloe. That confirmed my suspicion that it's something I can't do. It's often paired with wheat protein so... Double mess. Also think I can't do sunflower topically. People can have topical reactions to things they have no issues ingesting. From now on, if I try protein, I'm going to the refrigerator to do it. Lol. I'll try some yogurt, mayo, etc... And just do strand tests. Think that's going to be the best way for me to discover sensitivities/allergies.

And P.S... Got a deep conditioning shea butter treatment last night (Cantu) that said it was safe to leave on all night. Shea does good in my hair, and Ingredients seemed okay. Left it on for 6 hours, rinsed, and my hair was dry, brittle, and hard as a rock. I start researching it's ingredients on line and found several different sites, with different ingredients list, than what was on the product I purchased. Wheat proteins!! And several cones. What I got said no proteins/cones. I flipped. Had to re wash/lay on moisture. Hair does not feel good today. Just a tip... Triple check ingredients before you try.

I can't use Cantu at all!

My hair turns into straw and breaks off when I overdo the protein.

Once a week I mix some a dropper of silk amino acid in my prepoo and I try to keep other proteins out of my hair.

pre poo: avacado, banana babyfood, grapeseed oil, and silk amino acid. Cleanser: DC No Poo 1x a week and BC 1x a week. DT: GVP Cond balm and grape seed oil
Co-wash: GVP CD, TJ tea tree
Leave-in: GVP CD, TJ tea tree, and grape seed oil
Styling: HETT and castor oil
DD (8 & 6 yo): both4s (1 thick, 2 thin) keep in 2strand twists
DD (4yo): 3b (very thin, hard to grow) keep in single braids with lots of beads for protection
I would not have used it at all, if it would have been on the ingredient list. Horrible! Strands of my hair are fried from the roots to the tips, and I had just gotten it to where the ends were the only thing that felt really damaged a few days before.

I learned early on right after my big chop, so I was still learning, but I kept my hair short for a while so all the damage was cut out. It is really difficult to get the hair back to normal after over protein. fifi g, how do you get hair back to normal?

My hair just feels hard and hay-ish after using protein. I recently had this kind of hair after using an LA looks gel that I had stopped using for a while. When I checked the ingredients wheat protein was one of them. This confuses me though because biosilk silk therapy serum was my HG back when my hair was relaxed. I've also been wanting to try BRHG so I guess I probably shouldn't.

I don't know if I'm protein sensitive per se, I just think my hair does better without a lot of protein in my hair products. I do an occasional PT (maybe 1 every couple months, mostly because I'm lazy) and my hair seems to like that.

My hair seems to like keratin the best (CJ BSC, Repair Me) and silk amino acids the least. Protein overdose doesn't always mean hard, brittle hair; sometimes it just made my hair absolutely limp and no waves!
Coarse texture, normal-high porosity, normal elasticity (Komaza Care), very weak waves
cleanser: Redken Fresh Curls Shampoo, CJ Daily Fix

rinse out: GVP Conditioning Balm, CJ Repair Me, CJ Smoothing

jellies/creams: CR Curl Maker, KCCC, UFD Curly Magic
gels: CJ CQ, BRHG

I think I'm protein sensitive. I use Mega Tek once a month because it does make my hair grow faster, but it is a protein. As for the way my hair reacts to protein, protein does make my hair curlier, (which I don't want right now), and it does dry my hair out, so I always have to DT after using Mega Tek.

But I do notice that if I go longer than a month without a protein treatment, that my hair starts breaking. So am I sensitive or craving?
Shampoo: VO5 Kiwi Clarify Shampoo (monthly)

Deep Condition: Aubrey Organics Rose (1-2x a week)

Co-wash: Aubrey Organics Rose (2x a week)

Protein: Mega Tek (bimonthly, I'm sensative)

Leave-in/ Moisturizer: Vegetable Glycerin-Rose Water Spritz and/or conditioner (daily)

Sealant: Shea butter-coconut oil mixture (daily)

Hair type: 4a/4b?-0S, cottony, thick
I am highly allergic to wheat so does that mean that I wont be able to tolerate wheat protein?

At this stage (only 7 or 8 mos. CG), my hair is still craving protein. I find that my hair is really silky and feels conditioned after a PT. I have been following up with GVCB and leaving it on for a few minutes, since it seems like that's recommended by most on this site. I have fine hair, so perhaps most of you have thicker strands and don't need as much. I hope we all figure out what works! Thanks ladies
