mane and tail is like the worst product ever

okay so this is going to be something of a novel so i apologize, but i just want to warn anyone i can about this because mane n tail will make your hair sad.

so last december, i had very very long hair that i straightened every day or every other day. it wasn't THAT unhealthy, i mean obviously it was dry but it was still pretty shiny and all that. anyway, i decided i really wanted blue hair, so when i came home for winter break i bleached my hair to near-white and used manic panic dye.
well, it didn't work. for some reason the dye just didn't take at all. and i didn't want blonde hair, so i just dyed black over it.
you can probably guess by now that my hair was disgustingly mushy and stretchy and all-around weak, so i had it chopped from near waist-length to chin-length. i was still straightening, though.
my hair from that point on was gross. i didn't dye it again until august when i dyed the bottom layer and a chunk of my bangs blonde. that was damaging. i'm an idiot, i know. but then i decided to get serious and stop dyeing my hair once and for all, so for the last time in early september i dyed it black again and bought mane n tail.
for a while my hair loved it. it got stronger and seemed to grow a little faster.
unfortunately, i didn't know it was absolutely loaded with proteins. my hair got what it needed and then once it was through, it was protein overload. then my hair was too dry and i didn't know why. i had stopped straightening and dyeing. i had been using moroccan oil hair treatments. i had stopped washing every day, even. and my hair was somehow frizzier and dryer and terrible-er than ever. it seemed to be getting worse daily and i didn't get it!
it wasn't until i got to this site that i realized what i was doing to myself.... ugh. i can't imagine ever doing to my hair what i did to it ever again. i'm very sorry, hair.

I used MnT last week for the first time. My hair didn't like the protein in it either. Figured it would be good for my monthly protein treatment though. It should last a while too.

To offset the dry results of it, I used Bio Infusion Olive Oil deep conditioning treatment from walgreens (check reviews and ingredients online). It restored the moisture balance and softness in my hair for the first time since my BC last week.

Mane and Tail conditioner contains a wax. Maybe that is what you don't like.

marieantoinette 02-13-2012 09:46 PM

It didn't feel waxy, it just felt dry and crackly, though.

I don't think the Mane N Tail conditioner is bad. At the moment, it may seem like it because you are suffering from protein overload. Just keep doing moisture treatments and try to get your protein and moisture balance together. It's not exactly the conditioner's fault, you could've used any other conditioner with protein that much as the main way to condition hair, and you probably have the same effect. So, try to use it when needed and switch from moisturizing to protein conditioners depending on what your hair needs.

Agreed. I have has protein overload many times and I don't use M and T. The worse ever from from a coconut milk treatment. No need for blame. Just living, learning and trying to do better.

I beg the differ

Im transitioning from relaxed to natural and I realize that there is gonna be a certain amount of breakage when doing this:angry7:. I tried every conditioner I could possibly use and nothing helped. I co wash my hair and it was still shedding and breaking at an amount I was not comfortable with. I had the mane in tail detangler and the mane n tail hair strenghtner. I co washed with my regular conditioner and afterwards, sectioned my hair and applied the detangler, and the strengthner...I GOT NO BREAKAGE OR SHEDDING :blob5: Now as far as there shampoo and conditioner are concerned, i think you might be right....That sucked on my hair...I went back to organix ..but the detangler and the strengthner are definate keepers

I saw this and it brought back memories. I used to use the original mane-n-tail shampoo and conditioner with my horses. Apparently my horses needed more moisture and less protein, because I remember I got better results using my people shampoo and conditioner (the aussie-mega stuff) on them, and using THEIR mane-n-tail stuff on my hair! LOL but I can't use it anymore, because my hair has changed too much over the years.

I've actually never had a problem with mane and tail shampoo and conditioner. maybe it depends on someones hair

Mane and Tail isn't always a miracle product for everyone. Its been publicized my many. I think the conditioner is a great cg friendly cheap protein treatment. There are many who love it and many who don't. I'm not going to say your wrong or right because you hair is completely unique to you. Its like food allergies but for your hair lol. So atleast you now know to steer clear :D

However I don't think those who haven't tried it should be scared. When my hair was longer and I used it my hair had some amazing results using it as an RO. However when I started using it regularly and even the very first time my hair was quite different and even hard. My hair never liked protein but when it had moisture overload and lost curl a quick protein treatment was enough to get the curls a poppin' again so to speak lol. I'm just saying lots of experiments are involved. This product essentially helped my hairs health which lead to long term growth. I went from rib cage to true waist.

Needless to say my mother who's hair was thinning swears by this. And she has been using it ever since I gave it to her last year. Its almost like a "lip plumper" but for her hair. Now wrap you brain around that lol.

All in all its just another product to try. I knew a lady with horses who has gorgeous white blonde natural hair and she's been using it for over 20 years. Shrug to each their own ;)

Okay, I am just going to state the obvious...after ALL that you did to your hair why are you blaming MandT for your challenges? Your hair may be just finally suffering from the shock of all that it has been though...smh!

You need to "chill" on all the dyes and give your hair a rest using only CG friendly, gentle products on it until it gets strong again.

Just a thought...
