What oils do protein sensitive curlies use?
 
I'm looking for another oil to use on my hair. My hair is highly porous, and really only loves hydrolyzed proteins, and seems to like jamaican black castor oil (I just tried it a few days ago) and jojoba oil (Desert Essence), which i know has a little bit of protein. I used both of those to seal, with JBCO only on the ends.

My hair does not seem like EVOO, and grapeseed oil can be okay, but I always prefer jojoba oil. The odd thing, though, is that coconut oil does NOT work on my hair. I know that coconut oil helps to retain the protein that is already in your hair. This suggests that my hair already has a sufficient amount of protein, but I'm not sure why it doesn't react negatively to the jojoba oil...:/

Can anyone help explain this? Also, any suggestions for other oils that my work with my hair?

Jojoba "Oil" is not an oil but rather a liquid wax. I agree that I would think your hair would like coconut oil, but I do not really know why it does not.

I've heard good things about sweet almond oil.
I don't use too much oil as a 'low porosity protein sensitive' because in essence the hair shaft is 'sealed', and the battle is to get moisture in.

I hope someone else can chime in.

My hair likes castor oil and mango oil. Haven't seen the mango oil in some time. I've not tried mango butter.

specifically, what do highly porous, protein sensitive curlies use?

I like Argan oil, sweet almond oil and jane carters n&s & oyin Bsp which are great blends of oils...

Porous but protein sensitive?
 
How can your hair be highly porous and protein sensitive. That doesn't make sense to me. Make sure that your hair is not just temporarily protein overloaded.

My hair is porous, but it is also coarse. The coarse nature of my strands makes protein use difficult. It only tends to like keratin proteins.

Yes, same.

I actually have started using EVOO again and my hair really likes it! Maybe the oil is used before was unrefined or i was using another product that caused me to think the EVOO was not so great for my hair. Either way, I love it now!

If you don't mind explaining, what are keratin proteins and what are some examples?

I'm glad that the EVOO is working for you.

The proteiny conditioners that work best for me all contain hydrolyzed keratin - Joico K-Pak, the Sally's generic version of K-Pak, and Curl Junkie Repair Me!. They all have hearty doses of hydrolyzed keratin. The RM formulation is so good that I don't even notice the panthenol, which usually bothers my hair.


My hair tends to go into straw mode with wheat, soy, silk, oats, and most other grains and grass proteins.

I also have a much higher tolerance for protein in high dew points than in low ones. It's been quite humid, so I can use protein with every hair wetting right now. In winter, my hair needs more moisture, and I can go three months with no protein at all. In spring and fall, I use it a couple times a month or so.

Early in this hair care game, I couldn't use any protein at any time. I think I was a year in before I got that hair droop that a protein lack can cause. This was back before hair routines were type based instead of texture and porosity based. Had I known about porous hair back then, I would have worked on moisture retention (yay sealing) instead of copying every 3b trying to find a working routine.

Rimi, I love carrier oils and am gradually using what I have to try others.

DC: Mac Oil, Hemp seed, EVOO, Avocado
Seal or braid takedown: Avocado, Safflower, Cocoveda, Camelia
Smoothing such as for flat ironing or smoother curls: Argan, Camelia
Prepoo: EVCO and EVOO

I am protein sensitive and hair tends to be on the high end or porous. No oils have been a problem for me. I have identified several proteins that are culprits.

I have fine, high porosity hair AND dealing with high dew points pretty much year round. I haven't found a great oil yet that really works for me. EVOO was way too heavy. I'm currently trying grapeseed oil, but it's not doing much for my hair. I may look into almond oil next.
