Default How to Fix Too Much Protein Frizzies & Tangles

When I first began a modified CG routine about once a week I would use SS protein spray. It really brought out the waves in my hair.
After loads of trial and error I realized that I couldn't co wash so I began using Nature's Gate shampoos/conditioners every other day or so.
My hair started getting funky....extra frizzy and tangled. I've actually had some small matted sections at the root! No amount of moisture or conditioner made any difference.
It's been worse since the winter cold has arrived.
I think it may be protein overload. Or maybe the wrong type of protein?
How can I get my hair back from this tangled, frizzy mess?

I'm a 2a, medium/fine texture, med. thick, normal porosity and elasticity.

Could be protein. Could also be glycerin or other humectants (especially if it's been worse with the cold). Could be some other ingredient that your hair just doesn't like. People are very quick to blame protein for any problems they have with their hair, but there are a number of ingredients that can cause problems for some people (some polyquats, aloe, just to name a few).
A couple of ideas for tangles: sealing with oil after applying LI, being very conscious of necklines and fabrics (I love turtlenecks in the winter but they're awful for causing tangles in my underlayer)
To test ingredient sensitivity you just need to read labels and try avoiding each ingredient one at a time to narrow down what's causing the problems.

You can do a stretch test to help you determine if it is protein - it could be something else causing the problem. Protein overload typically results in dry and straw-like hair that tangles up when wet. If it is protein, you can only remove the protein containing products and do lots of conditioning.

My hair:
2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
LI: KCKT or CJSL
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)

Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.

After much trial and error and discovering that many products caused scalp issues and weighed my hair down, I only use Natures Gate shampoo/conditioner (mostly the Biotin, Daily Herbal & Pomegranate Sunflower) and Marie Dean Mango Cupuacu Hair Pudding (protein free) which I scrunch in. And once or twice a month SS protein spray which is a leave in.
Today I used Mop C moisturing shampoo and the MD pudding and there was definitely an improvement in the frizzy tangles.
That's why I suspect the NG products which if I am reading the labels correctly are loaded with different types of proteins...including Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein.

I forgot to check both of my NG conditioners, but I did check my NG Jojoba Conditioner when I used it this morning. Yes, there are a bunch if proteins, but the second ingredient is also glycerin. I don't have the DM product or the SS spray, but I have a feeling that they are either glycerin-free or glycerin is listed lower in the ingredients.

I definitely had protein problem. I clarified with Paul Mitchell clarifier and deep conditioned with Nexxus deep conditioning cream for thirty minutes (two days in a row) and it was a miracle. For the longest time, I didn't know I had a protein problem so I'd have to constantly cut dry straw like ends and i couldnt grow long hair. Ever since I cut out products with protein, my hair has been so healthy and LONG. I also have low porosity hair.

Could gycerin cause the same problem. Dry, frizzy, tangled hair? Where I live the air is very dry in winter, (especially in indoor heated air) humid in summer.

Yes, especially in low dew points. People who react to glycerin get the exact same issues. Some people can only use glycerin in moderate dew (40-60ish). Some can't use at all. And it does sound like you live in an area with lower dew points during the winter. Glycerin essentially moves moisture from where there's more to where there's less. So in a humid environment glycerin would pull moisture from the air into your hair. But in a very dry environment it would actually pull the moisture out of your hair, causing many of the same problems that are associated with protein sensitivity.
