Need some clarification about coconut oil, aloe, and jojoba oil
 
Pretty new to CG and just discovered I'm protein sensitive. I know some ingredients that are definitely proteins but I'm not sure about a few others.

Aloe? I believe aloe has protein but want to be sure that's correct.
Jojoba oil? I think I read somewhere this should be the only oil with protein.
Coconut oil? I know people can be sensitive to it and I'm wondering if it's because it has protein.

Please help! Thanks!

Someone told me that coconut oil DOESN'T have protein in it.
I cant use it. It dries out my hair, really bad.
Not sure about the others

These oils can behave like proteins, but aren't proteins themselves.

Aloe vera contains protein. It's a plant, all plant life has protein.
Jojoba oil contains protein, oil never contains it but jojoba isn't really an oil (it's a liquid wax).
Coconut oil isn't protein and doesn't contain it, but it protects the natural protein in the hair once it penetrates.

About the coconut oil...you said, "it protects the natural protein in the hair once it penetrates." Does that make it good or bad for coarse, dense hair with lo porosity? Or is this another individual thing? I don't even know if I COULD get the oil to penetrate my hair.

Protein sensitive heads usually react pretty negatively to straight coconut oil...you can try testing it on a small section if you'd like to try it though. It will definitely penetrate if you leave it on long enough, it can take from 6 to 14 hours depending on porosity/how much you apply.

I have very coarse strands and low porosity too, I personally can't use straight coconut oil but my hair is fine with it when it's formulated in a product.

Okay, learning a lot here.

I had no idea straight coconut oil took that long to penetrate! I tried it once in the shower (before CG) and didn't think I liked it but it's all coming together now. 14 hrs...ain't nobody got time for that!

I've been avoiding products with coconut oil in them and it's been a nightmare since so many have it. It's really helpful to know you can tolerate it in a product. That kind of widens the number of products I've been looking at to try. So, thank you!!

Haha, if one wants CO to penetrate it's probably best to baggy overnight rather than sit around waiting for it! :D

You probably don't have to avoid protein to an extreme. Some protein are stronger than others (hydrolyzed is strongest) their placement in the ingredient list is about as important as their strength too. I personally avoid all protein and ingredients that act like it if they're near the top of the list, but I'm willing to try milder proteins towards the middle - end of the list. There they won't strengthen the hair but condition it, half the time they're too large to enter the shaft anyway.

im protein sensitive and i have no problem with coconut oil. in fact it changed my hair for the better. If i use a rinse out with protein in it, it dries my hair out. i guess im lucky with coconut oil.

Aloe vera in skincare and haircare products is usually a purified extract from the plant, generally contains little protein it is rich in humectants (polysaccharides = carbohydrates). A high quality AV inner leaf gel is considered to be hypo-allergenic because most of the allergens (almost always proteins) are removed or broken down to amino acids (completely water soluble).

Any pure oil is a pure fat it contains little to no protein, go to a grocery store and read the nutrition information if you have that listed on the packaging in your country. There is an awful lot of incorrect identifying of culprits and HG ingredients on many skincare and haircare boards.If you want to learn more there is a series of excellent articles here on NC by 'curl chemist' Tonya McKay, the Natural Haven blog is also superb for bringing cosmetic science to the layman.

Assuming you are purchasing good quality AV or oils I would be amazed if there is anything more than a trace of protein, absolutely not enough to build up on the hair and cause any problems at all. If you especially want to avoid even traces of protein choose a refined oil not an unrefined/ extra virgin cold pressed oil but be aware sometimes these are refined using solvents.

My low poo has aloe in it, I think, but it doesn't bother my hair as much as coconut oil does. Like another user, coconut oil dries my hair out. I can't use coconut anything on my hair.
