What makes a Gel hold?

Do any of you know what ingredient or ingredients in hair gel make them give hold?

I know that PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) and VA (vinyl acrylate) are "hold" ingredients in many gels, but many of the gels and styling lotions sold at CurlMart do not contain those ingredients.

I'm just wondering what I should look for.

Exactly that's why I asked. It's a good question.

I wonder if anybody knows.....

Some of the styling products sold here at CurlMart have PVP or PVP/VA, but not all. So... I'd like to know what "hold ingredient" is in the others. Some may not actually have any and we have to use a separate product to achieve any hold.

Prayer and/or cursing at my hair helps to get it to stay in place for me...but I don't think that's included in the list of ingredients for a gel.

sorry....couldn't resist....

LOL..... I've tried that too.... but it doesn't work as well as a gel with a good hold ingredient.
