So I made my own FSG and
I went all out big time.
I soaked the flax over night. Then I added dead sea salt and cooked it until the white foam appeared on top. I cooled it off and added aloe vera juice, agave nectar, seamollient, extracts of Rosemary, Lavender, Rose, Nettle, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Yucca, Horsetail, Melissa, and Plantago. Then I added Dehydroxanthan Gum and Raspberry Dimethicone WS (water souble). Topped it off with a preservative.
The last 4 days my hair has held curl all the way to the root. My curls are really well formed and even with high dew points (in the 70's) I haven't had any frizz. I'm pretty excited about the idea of making my own products. Next I'm going to try a conditioner and then try and extra hold gel to layer with my FSG. Here are some pictures. I wish I could get better pictures.

Your hair looks fantastic. The more I try different gels the more I love FSG. Some others are OK, but FSG is consistently great.
Plus you really did go all out with your recipe. I could not begin to get all those ingredients!

Your hair looks Awesome! Was wondering why you put in Dead Sea Salt though....I'm new at this and still trying to learn. How much did you add?

I really like your cut! Is is technically a "bob" I want to try something different but I always chicken out and go for "trim into long layers" The gel is great- never again have to shop for one!

Is FSG similar to what Botticelli Botanicals Flax gelee is?
Your hair looks divine!

What are the benefits of all the oils you put in the fsg? Why did you choose those particular ones?

I used the Botticelli Botanicals FSG last night . . . it gives me really nice curl formation!

Does the aloe Vera juice make it more moisturizing? I've been putting aloe gel in my fsg and it seems to be drying almost. I'm also curious about the dead sea salt, seems to be a strange ingredient to me lol. Right now my fsg has agave nectar and rose oil, but I want to see what other goodies I can add to it.

Aloe should be moisturizing, however, some people find FOTE aloe gel to be drying. The salts are more likely to be the cause of drying though. It can give great curl formation if you can handle it though.

I would add magnesium oil rather than the salts. They aren't at all drying. I also think that it's the "quality" of the AVG that you use that can make it drying. I, personally, found FOTE drying--so use health food quality aloe vera (gel or juice) or Essential Wholesale Simple Aloe Jelly in my FSG.

Kathymack were do you like to buy your mag oil? And what ratio do you recommend to go from salts to oil in the FSG recipe? I currently use about 4 tsp mag sulfate in 3 cups of water. My hair is ok (not dried out) with that amount, but I'd like to try something new. See if I like it better. Thanks!

I bought the magnesium oil here: http://www.swansonvitamins.com/SWU48...LAID=338697624
I don't add anything until after I strain. I do 1/8 t of magnesium oil to 4 oz FSG.

If I'm prone to being over-moisturized, should I use the magnesium oil, or am I better off with the mag sulfate? I am determined to make the perfect batch of FSG (:

I don't think the small amount of magnesium oil will over moisturize you. Magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) is easy to pick up at the drugstore. Try that first. I would suggest that you make a bunch of FSG, freeze it in 4 oz portions and add ingredients based on the previous 4 oz. You'll never know what's perfect for you until you try it and monitor and adjust. Remember hair needs change based on the season, so what works now may need to change in the Fall.

Thanks, kathymack. I've tried the epsom salts, and have definitely noticed better curl. But my hair has just been off the last few weeks. I can't tell if it's from that, from the new conditioner, or if it just needs more protein.
I think I'll try out the magnesium oil though!
