Default Hair breakage and homemade treatments

What do you do to avoid hair breakage ?
Do you know of any good homemade treatments for dealing with hair breakage ?
I have 3c/4a hair.
I get a lot of broken hairs when detangling and styling, not sheded hairs, but broken hairs.
I've read of some people having as little as 5 broken hairs while detangling, and am totally amazed. How is that possible ?
I detangle my hair when it's soaking wet with a lot of conditioner in it. I've tried switching combs, brushes, detangling with my fingers, but there are always a lot of broken hairs in the process. Evening after my hair is fully detangled, brushing it for smoothing even while it's damp and moist results in more broken hairs.

Do any of you experience the same amount of breakage ?

How does one know whether her hair is lacking protein or moisture? I have read quite a few articles and posts on the issue but still am not sure what my hair is lacking.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

No, you're not alone. I experience a lot of breakage no matter how gently I treat my hair. I get breakage as I'm massaging oil onto my scalp, I get breakage as I'm rinsing out the herbal paste on my hair, I get breakage when I shampooing my hair w/ a sulfate-free shampoo, and I get breakage over the next twenty-four hours after I shampoo my hair. Heck, I even pull out round wads of hair that hang off the ends of my hair.

I'd be interested in hearing about home treatments as well.

ETA: I oiled my scalp and hair today, then shampooed and conditioned it today. After collecting all the hair that broke off while in the shower, I counted and lost count after 170 strands of various length.

I was incredibly gentle with my hair in the shower. Yet still so much hair was broken off.

One decision that I've made is to stop using the Hesh herbal powders. I love how the neem clears out the dandruff on my scalp but this amount of breakage is too much for me to deal with.

I also get constant breakage with my hair. Luckily, my hair grows very fast so I still manage to retain growth even with all the breakage.

I noticed much less breakage though since I've been using olive oil in my hair. I think the oil keeps my hair from shrinking and from tangling, both of which contribute to breakage. But the oil is light enough that my hair isn't left greasy. I've been doing oil treatments about once per week and I also use a homemade olive butter every day to seal my ends.

Oil treatment:
-Heat equal parts of olive oil and coconut oil with a splash of castor oil.
-Apply the oils to damp hair my smoothing it in with fingers.
-Cover with a plastic cap and wrap with a towel.
-Leave it in for 1-3 hours (or overnight for deep treatment)
-Rinse with cold water, then apply your leave-in and style.

Olive butter
-Whip 1 cup olive oil with 1 cup shea butter.
-Add essential oils for scent.

taltal, this past Sunday, I did a PT using plain yogurt. I slathered it in and let it sit for an hour, shampooed my hair. After it air-dried very quickly, it was like straw but there was VERY LITTLE breakage. Normally, I go on to lose hundreds of hairs but this time, practically none.

Wow I don't think I've ever experienced hair breakage, ever. My hair's fallen out but I can't remember a time when it's broken ( I detangle when wet too). I have 3b hair though. It sounds like you need more protein. Try full fat yogurt mixed with bananas and leave on for 30 minutes. Make sure you mash up the bananas really well or they'll clump in your hair and follow up with a really good conditioner. You HAVE to condition because although protein makes your hair stronger, it dries it out

Also you may want to consider having more protein in your diet. Lentils are a really good source (you should look at indian recipes for yummy stuff) and almonds are good too.

Actually it makes sense that I don't have hair breakage cause I eat a lot of lentils and almonds. Protein from plant sources is healthier than animal sources. However, from plant sources, you need to eat a variety of different types of protein sources to get all the different types you need. Animals tend to just have it all in there at once

Just a followup: I've been doing the yogurt PT everyweek but the breakage has returned. It's still not as bad as before I started the PT but it's still breaking. So, I'm not sure what more to do.

Is this another example of protein overload?

I would suggest you check your protein. You can get breakage from both too much and too little protein. Check your diet and also your products. You may be suffering from protein overload or you may not be getting enough. You can check some of the other threads for signs of protein overload. HTH

Don't forget to check your products. A lot of curly products include protein, silk is very popular lately. But there are others that don't. Just something for you to ponder...

Well, this past week, I actually recorded my food intake and kept count of how much protein I was consuming. YIKES!!! Barely half of what I apparently need. I'm going to work on improving my diet and hope that helps.

I have to do a food journal every now and then too. I use Fitday.com and that helps a lot. I went raw vegan for about nine months once and my hair started falling out in clumps even though I was eating tons of nuts, seeds, spirluna, and other foods with protein. When I added animal protein, my hair stopped falling out. I do heavy cardio and weight training so my requirements may be a little different...

Cali Chik, I never heard of green tea for preventing breakage. I'll try that next time I wash my hair. I have some good Chinese green tea.

Little Red, thanks for reminding me about yoghurt DCs. I used to use yoghurt a lot but hadn't for a few months ago. I've done one this week and will try to be consistent with it, to see whether it helps.

I know this post is old, but I just wanted to remind you about the importance of following any protein treatment with a moisturizing deep conditioner. Doing so will help maintain the protein-moisture balance, otherwise you risk running into protein overload.

Once fall became evident, I noticed some breakage, so I made the following treatment that I used last year:

Avocado Protein Masque
Ingredients:

3-Avocados-my hair is long and thick
1 tablespoon of Water
1/2 cup of Hempseed oil

I used a blender until it became pureed. This way there are no chunks of avocado left in your hair. Then I sat under a dryer for deep conditioning about 40 minutes, medium-low heat. I let my hair cool, then cowashed or low pooed.

If I want a bit more moisture, then I add a banana (the more ripe the better) and another tablespoon of water to the mixture.

You don't have to sit under a dryer; I just know that using a dryer helps the conditioner penetrate my cuticles better.

No I disagree with the comments here. I eat Paleo, take omega 3, Prenatals, flax, and vitamin d. I deep condition and never use heat it chemicals. I am often told I have the most beautiful hair ever but guess what, I get breakage and split ends. I get fewer split ends now, but I have always had them even after a hair cut. It's genetic. I hope that doing a low porosity regimen will help me but I am feeling hopeless.

As a lifestyle healthcare professional I agree that nutrition is only effective if the diet is poor or imbalanced, which it actually is for the vast majority of westerners.

If you are truly eating Paleo instead of a sanitised modern version there is no way you would need all those supplements, in fact you could be doing more harm than good by setting up imbalances. Our ancestors ate fish and seafood on a daily basis, they got more than enough bioavailable vitamin D and long chain omega-3s. You would not need to take flax as a supplement if you were eating an appropriate amount of fish, whole nuts and seeds.

True Paleo is not simply about what you cut out, it's about what you add back to the diet - eating a much wider variety of foods than the average US or UK citiizen, including organ meats like liver and heart, lean wild game, fish with bones, other seafood especially molluscs, animal bone stocks and marrow, nuts and seeds. Too many eat largely fatty farm animal muscle meats, fruit and vegetables and claim Paleo, they baulk at eating molluscs, game, offal, seeds and fish bones but archaeology shows this IS what our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate prior to dairy and grain farming.

I've never seen any study showing regular split ends to be genetic unless you actually have a diagnosed medical condition that makes your hair grow abnormally? All the research shows they are caused by combination of weathering/ mechanical damage, UV, chemical and heat damage. If you have splits after a haircut you simply are not trimming back far enough, you might benefit from a detailed hair analysis like Komaza Care, they will tell you exactly how far to cut to rid yourself of any damage that is travelling up the shaft.

If your hair is hip length as your username implies, weathering and complete cuticle loss is probably an issue for you - this comes from shampooing, brushing or combing, hair rubbing on your clothing and bed linen, the hairstyles and accessories you choose. Protective styling and soft fabrics like silk and satin are important, you can also patch cuticle damage with products containing hydrolysed proteins, ceramides, panthenol and coconut oil. I am liking Komaza Care Matani repair treatment. If you have not already purchase a seamless wide tooth comb or only use your fingers to detangle, a silk pillowcase or satin sleep bonnet.
