Default Recipe for curl refresher spray?

Anyone have a good one not involving honey/animal products?

You can use agave in place of honey. I use a base of either 30:70 or 50:50 AVG and distilled water, then add various things as whim strikes. Usually a few drops of oil (jojoba or sweet almond), a little honey or agave, and a few drops of EO (lavender, rosemary, geranium, etc). I combine it all in a spray bottle and shake like mad. I can get pretty good 2nd day hair with it (sometimes even 3rd). You could add some mag sulfate - it's a good curl enhancer, and a lot of people have success with it. My hair has a low tolerance so I don't use it. HTH.

At the moment I'm using a mix of water and baby hair lotion mixed with some lavender oil and wheat germ oil. I use 2 batches, 1 in a spraybottle and 1 in a bottle with a very small opening for applying straight on my head.

I'm sorry if this sounds stupid, but what's baby hair lotion? Well, okay, I can guess it's some kind of cream or lotion for babies' hair, but I've never heard of it. Can you tell me who makes a product like that? I'm always looking to try new things in my refresher spray.

jomamma, I meant to specify in my original reply that if you use aloe gel, depending on thickness, you will probably want to keep the ratio around 30:70 - 40:60. I use FOTE AVG, which is very thick; if I go much higher I get more of a stream that a spray. If you're using aloe juice you can probably go with a higher ratio if you want to, since it's much thinner. HTH!

I bought lavender EO and a jug of distilled water with the intention of making a spray from this. Have yet to do it though. I never try to get 2nd day curls. My 2nd day hair involves either a ponytail, twist or bun -- nothing really showing an attempt at nice curls.

One day I have got to make that spray and give it a try on a weekend.

Lavender EO & H2O never did a thing for me. I'd given up on 2nd day hair until I got the tip about using AVG & H2O here on the boards.

baby hair lotion .... I'm from Europe. It's a liquid to put in baby's hair to freshen it up, smells great. Here all baby skin and haircare manufacturers make it. I myself use Zwitsal most of the time or a homebrand. It needs to be hairlotion though, not lotion.

I've used aloe vera gel, water, and vegetable glycerine with moderate results. The best refresher I've tried, so far, has been aloe vera gel and oilve oil mixed in the palm of my hands. My second day hair is usually a bun or ponytail of some sort, so I just smooth it in my hair. I'd like to try the olive oil and aloe vera gel in a spray bottle, though.

50:50 distilled water: veggie glyceryn. Great moisturizing curl refresher in my opinion. I have also made 50:50 water: honey but you have to make only what you are going to use because the honey ferments in the water and it will go bad so do not save it for later use. I think its easy enough to make everytime you need it. HTH!

Default Organic Coconut Oil

I noticed in BlueSheep's signature the coconut oil. I have to agree - it doesn't go on greasy either. I got my best results by not totally rinsing it out.

What kind of aloe vera gel? Just the type you buy for burns?

I use FOTE, but some people prefer LOTD. If you have an aloe plant you can use that, too.

So, my refresher is more of a re-hydrator+sealant, as it doesn't promote curl, but smooths down the frizz and re-hydrates the spirals.

I don't have a problem w/ keeping curl/definition on 2nd and 3rd day hair, but I get super dry and therefore start to have frizz and puffy curls. In this weather (dews in low 70s) a spray and scrunch would cause massive frizz, so what is working for me is to scrunch in a little CJ smoothing lotion for moisture, and then use my spray bottle concoction, spritzing a little in my hand and then smoothing down the curl and twisting w/ the spirals. It moisturizes, seals, and then re-activates the CK and gel. I let it dry, and then SOTC. For the first time, I have 3rd day hair that looks almost as good as 1st day and that I can wear down.

So, the recipe is as follows. I mix about 2 tbs of Lustrasilk olive oil conditioner (your fav. LI would work here, but b/c of the dews, I chose one w/o humectants and w/ sealing properties) and 1 tsp of semi-softened coconut oil into a spray battle filled w/ distilled water.

Basically, I think this would work w/ any LI+ either coconut oil, evoo, avocado oil, jojoba oil, etc. It's more about the combination of moisture and sealant+ the technique that works. Just adjust your products for the weather.
