volume

What do you add to your recipes to add volume to your hair?
CurlyFireHorse
Hair: 2a or 3a (not sure), very porous and fine as frog hair
Day 1: Cowash and condition with AO GPB, ACV Rinse,
Co-Kra gel (this stuff is fantastic)

Day 2: KCKT, KCCC, plop, KCCC, plop again, air dry
Day 3: Curly Kinks Satin Roots, Coil Jam
Day 4: IAGirl's PT, KBB DT, FSG

Co-Kra gel is my own concoction of okra boiled in coconut milk. It is a cross between FSG and KCCC and leaves my hair very soft and shiny
Id like to know this also!

Naturally brunette but dyed hair, dark brown ( nearly black ) in November 2010.Trying to grow to WL but only past SL atm. Currently not CO washing and using Pantenes shampoo. Styling: Schwarzkopf ultimate repair serum with total ends repair. Also use Aussies 3 miracle worker from time to time. 3B,bouncy ringlets, medium thickness, strands are neither fine nor coarse, dry, low elasticity ( when wet, but high elasticity when dry ) and proud to be a curly!
I don't *add* anything, but do leave out heavy oils and butters that will weigh it down.

I'm also careful how I dry my hair. I personally use a diffuser upside down and then gather my hair up into a scrunchy on top of my head for a while. I know there has been many posts about how to achieve volume around here in other sections on the forum too.
3a/3b Medium Texture & Normal Porosity
Modified CG since November 2009
Low Poo - (Once in a while) True Polaris Solid Shampoo Bar
CO-wash/Condish - (I'm lazy, one step only!) True Polaris Solid Conditioner Bars
Styling - True Polaris Truly Curly Styling Gel I add 'cones in summer Truly Frizz Free Hair Serum
I plop and defuse daily

I love MUSE
Ceri, thank you for replying. I have tried clipping, diffusing, doing everything upside down, ice queen method, super soaker method, etc., none really work for me the way silicones do. I love making my own products and was hoping there was an additive that I had not considered.

Even if there is no such additive, I am staying away from silicones. My hair may not have much volume, but it is much healthier without the sulfates and cones.

I feel that using protein (Colorful Neutral Protein Filler) and xanthan gum in FSG (I've used them in okra gel too) help make my hair appear more voluminous. WIthout thickeners and/or protein, things can get a bit sparse-looking. Xanthan gum, in particular, seems to do that. Not in an overly-fluffy way. I use about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of each per cup of homemade gel.

Most grocery stores (here, anyway) have xanthan gum with the gluten-free flours. Check the Natural section, maybe?
Thank you! I'm so glad I asked. I would never have thought to check there.

No problem. It's used as a substitute for the elasticity/stickyness of gluten. I wouldn't know where to find it, either, if I weren't gf! Good luck!
I get the Rob's Red Mill brand xanthan gum, or else Now Foods (health food store brand).

Thanks for the suggestion. I know a store where I can find the Rob's Red Mill brand. I haven't had any luck finding xantham gum in my regular grocery store.

Co-kra, huh? gotta try.I love I A girl 's suggestion, of putting the liquid protein filler in little glass spray bottle and just spraying on damp hair, before anything.I use an old aura cleanser bottle, so scent is divine*(botanical alchemy),I add a little silk protein f/ Iherb, a little seamollient, and honey to FSG, along with mag sulfate. and 1 tsp of seamollient to 3 cups of finished FSG(cant freeze) can be drying ,though so proceed sparingly.

on an aside, you can add xantham gum and guar gum to smoothies to get really, voluptuous, fluffy smoothies . A blogger named Smoothiegirl does it all the time.

I'm thinking that adding epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) or any other salt will volume to hair (hellooooo ocean) but it can be drying to some. My hair doesn't like the ocean too much, but diluted MS seems okay.

To start with I clarify around twice a month by adding baking powder to my usual conditioner. If you want more volume check out the Deva Curl website, they have these really long clips that you put a little bit of gel on (They use the special Deva Curl gel but I just use mine, it works just as well) then they place them on their sides at the root line of your hair or anywhere you need volume. I'm pretty sure that they're called Deva Clips. I didn't do a very good job of explaining but they have a video showing how to use the clips on the Deva Curl website. I haven't tried any of their other products, has anyone else tried them? Do they work?
I need to test some things. I find that while my hair is fine, it can be quite puffy if I leave product out and just scrunch. Product, while it defines curls, restricts it from swelling. Naked, free, hair is my favorite! It is also quite voluminous if I plop overnight, but since my hair is above my shoulders, it gets kind of weird looking.

Maybe I just haven't found the right products.
Dense but fine and delicate 3a hair. Feels like a dandelion without product. Difficulties in getting less puff and more definition when short.

On a mission to grow out after my big chop!
